The Trustees of the Prospere Learning Trust would like to invite applications to the post of Teacher of Maths for CHS South.
This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional candidate to work with the new Head of School in developing our brand new 11-16 Secondary School, opened in conjunction with Chorlton High School in 2018.
Forming part of the Prospere Learning Trust, CHS South opened in September 2018 as a mixed comprehensive school providing 180 places to our initial Year 7 cohort, growing to 210 places in September 2019. The delivery model at CHS South is based upon the structures and processes that have successfully delivered change at Chorlton High School, our sister school - as such we work very closely with the Mathematics department and jointly collaborate to deliver the same high quality curriculum to our learners. In September 2017, Chorlton High School adopted a Mastery approach at Key Stage 3 and since then the teaching staff have been involved in regular CPD around the core principles of Mastery and worked together to collaboratively plan lessons which embrace these principles. Since September 2018, the Maths departments from both CHS South and Chorlton High School have worked closely to continue to deliver a consistent approach to the Mastery lessons which have proved to be popular amongst our learners. The lessons follow a four-part Singapore lesson structure, with the greatest emphasis on problem-solving and encouraging learners to approach questions using a variety of different methods or representations. Members of our department work very closely with the North West Maths Hubs and form part of the Mastery Specialist programmes to ensure we are at the forefront of new developments in Mathematics pedagogy, which is shared across the schools through regular CPD, which subsequently feeds into the planning of our lessons. The Mathematics department is well resourced with interactive Clever Touch screens and visualisers in every classroom. ICT is increasingly used amongst learners and they have access to both Mathswatch and Doddle as part of their independent learning. Lessons are planned jointly in advance of the following term which uses planning time more efficiently - the success of the Mathematics team is underpinned by collaboration both at CHS South and across the Trust to ensure quality lessons are being developed for all learners. Whilst the initial staff at CHS South is small, colleagues have a wide range of experience and skills and are extremely supportive of each other. Members of the department actively promote Mathematics and Numeracy around the school and are committed to the provision of an excellent learning environment setting high standards of progress and achievement for all.
Key Stage 3
Throughout Years 7 to 8, pupils are taught in classes appropriate to their ability. Year 7 pupils are organised into bands during their first term in school, based on SATs scores. All learners follow the same mastery curriculum, which is differentiated appropriately and there is a great emphasis on encouraging learners with the belief that by working hard at Mathematics they can succeed and that making mistakes is not seen as a failure but as a valuable opportunity for new learning. Each term, leaners are assessed using Progress Tests and leaners may be moved across bands where appropriate, however these movements are minimal. A range of homework has been produced which links to the mastery curriculum and learners also support their independent learning through the use of the websites mentioned above. Learners are encouraged to document aspects of their learning in a Maths Journal, which has helped them to develop their mathematical thinking and to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the various approaches to a mathematical problem.
Key Stage 4
There may be the opportunity to work in a KS4 setting at our sister school, Chorlton High School, which is located right next to CHS South. The Mathematics Department at Chorlton High School has once again enjoyed good results during last year's exam season. The achievement at level 9 to 4 stands at 65%, with 17% of the year group achieving a level 7 or above. The work within the department has been central to the success of the school’s results and its OFSTED grading of Good with Outstanding features. Key stage 4 students study the Edexcel Linear course and are entered for examination in Year 11. Homework is provided with examination style questioning and students are assessed on a through a rigorous practice exam timetable.. We also offer the AQA Further Maths qualification to a selection of our higher ability students.
We are committed to recruiting and retaining outstanding practitioners onto our teaching and our support teams to ensure that our students achieve their very best and are led by happy, dedicated and highly skilled staff. As part of this commitment we ensure ongoing training and personalised development for all staff. We have an exciting calendar of CPD training events; active and motivating sessions focused on Teaching and Learning, student attainment and staff well-being.
We offer a wide range of other benefits to staff including: excellent pension schemes (Teachers Pension for Teaching Staff, Greater Manchester Pension Fund for support staff), cycle to work scheme and childcare vouchers. We also have a strong focus on staff wellbeing, providing support for healthcare costs plus access to counselling and 24 hour telephone healthcare advice through the BUPA Health Cash Plan.
CHS South is part of the Prospere Trust, a strong Multi-Academy Trust with a growing number of Secondary and Special schools that provide excellent opportunities for all students based on our commitment to academic rigour and exceptional opportunities for the young people within our academies.
