This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  All posts are subject to a satisfactory DBS enhanced check.

Mathematics Curriculum Area

The post is an opportunity for a strong mathematician to gain a role in a department and a school where there is a real focus on professional progression.  The team is completely committed to developing every member’s mathematical subject and pedagogical knowledge. Our A-level and GCSE outcomes are incredibly strong, and continue to improve every year.  This is because the quality of teaching in this department is outstanding across the team.

Each student is encouraged to become an effective mathematician by mastering new concepts and acquiring the efficacy to attempt unfamiliar and challenging questions. As a department, we place considerable emphasis on personal responsibility and the acquisition of good study skills leading to independent learning.  To this end we offer support in the form of excellent resources, maths clinic and a professional and committed department.  Each student is carefully monitored and is encouraged to strive to improve.  We believe that there is no cap on a student’s potential and every effort is made to address their needs and support them to the best of our ability.

Maths clinic provides an opportunity for students to take responsibility for their own learning and access one-to-one support for topics they feel unsure of or find particularly challenging.  A vital part of learning in maths is being able to read the mathematics and apply the knowledge that they have to solve problems.  Having this drop-in session at lunchtimes encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning.  Part of meeting the challenge of learning mathematics requires students to experience the frustration of ‘getting stuck’ at certain points in their learning.  Maths clinic provides an invaluable resource to all students as it is fundamental that these frustrations are overcome by giving the students the opportunity to address the issues promptly, thus enabling them to progress further in their learning.

The department is situated in a purpose-built block of classrooms, and benefits from fully networked interactive whiteboards in every classroom, as well as ample office and storage space.   The mathematics team consists of twelve specialist maths teachers and is currently led by Mr Mark McMahon.

Alongside high aspiration for all, Bennett’s results are achieved through outstanding teaching. The school has high expectations of its teaching staff, they work hard and are committed and focussed; teaching is very strong across the school.

Bennett is strongly committed to developing teachers professionally, and believes that all staff should have an active and positive role to play in the development of policy and practice.  This generates great enthusiasm and a strong sense of teamwork.

As a designated Teaching School, we invest strongly in teacher professional development, for example by providing training so that staff can achieve the Outstanding Teacher accreditation, as well as leadership training at all levels.

Bennett is a Church of England school, and it is expected that all staff support the school’s distinctive ethos in their professional role.
