Job overview

Teacher of Music, Ashford School (part-time)

United Learning

Ashford School is part of United Learning, a large and growing group of schools aiming to offer a life-changing education across England. As a group, we achieve more by sharing than any single school could.

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational, independent day and boarding schools, having twice been voted Independent School of the Year. The School was endorsed as excellent in every category during the most recent inspection.

Ashford School is an equal opportunities employer and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified candidates.

The Role

We are seeking an inspiring, creative and adventurous part-time Music Teacher to teach this key area of student life at Ashford School. This is a fantastic opportunity to assist in shaping our musical future as we seek to build a national reputation for music.

The Music Department is led by the Director of Music within the Faculty for Creative and Performing Arts. The Music Department is proud of its Steinway status and its facilities include an organ, as well as a range of practice rooms which are used by a large team of visiting music teachers. The co-curricular programme within Music is wide-ranging and has particularly strong links to the Drama Department. The successful candidate will have the thirst and vision to grow and enhance our musical provision, harnessing the talents of all our pupils and giving them opportunities to both perform and enjoy music of all genres.

As a Teacher of Music, the successful candidate will need the imagination, commitment and ambition to challenge students to enjoy the study and performance of music, as well as the insight and enthusiasm to convey its intricacies. The department teaches the Edexcel GCSE and A Level Music courses; a position of responsibility to lead on the academic programme may be available for a suitably experienced applicant.

An understanding and experience of quality in performance music is essential, along with high levels of energy and excellent interpersonal skills.  The successful candidate should be academically well-qualified with a degree in music and performance-level proficiency in at least two instruments; the ability to accompany pupils on the piano would be a distinct advantage.

In addition to advanced keyboard skills, the successful candidate will have experience of leading and conducting orchestras, choirs and ensemble groups. The Teacher of Music will also be expected to assist with developing co-curricular music in the School, supporting our vision for music to be integral in the educational lives and development of our pupils. Building upon opportunities to engage with the local community are a key priority for the music and other departments. With many talented Ashford School musicians in its ranks, Ashford School is synonymous with Ashford’s flagship jazz ensemble the Ashford Youth Jazz Orchestra (AYJO). Similar initiatives to provide opportunities for music making to a wider audience also include Primary school workshops and a Primary school music day held in Brake Hall.

Candidates should be familiar with computer technology as a tool for learning, teaching and administration. All teaching rooms are equipped with permanent internet access and interactive whiteboards; all students in KS3 and KS4 have access to a Surface Go in their lessons which they use to access a variety of learning platforms.

Teachers at Ashford enjoy a welcoming, comfortable and well-resourced environment and are provided with assistance from a range of support staff, including an Administrator who is dedicated to the organisation of events for Music and Drama within the Creative and Performing Arts Faculty.

Single person accommodation may be available in return for boarding duties.

The teaching allocation for this post is 0.8 of a full-time contract. For candidates with an interest in Academic Music leadership, this post will also attract a teaching and learning responsibility allowance.

Salary by negotiation and dependent on skills, attributes and qualifications of the successful candidate.

Note - We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.

About Ashford School

Ashford School is one of the UK's leading coeducational independent day and boarding school, founded in 1898.  Ashford has all the benefits of being a school of individual character, coupled with the security and support offered by membership of the United Learning group of independent schools and academies. We are proud that the School is able to provide a seamless learning journey for children from 3 months to 18 years on a beautiful campus in the heart of Kent.

Ashford School, East Hill:

Our Senior School and Bridge Nursery make up Ashford School’s beautiful 25-acre campus close to the centre of Ashford and surrounded by Kent countryside.

The Senior School occupies a site in a prominent position in the busy and growing commuter town of Ashford and is close to the International Station. It has on-site playing fields, floodlit Astroturf pitch, tennis and netball courts, as well as a recently opened Sports Centre complete with gyms, fitness suite and an indoor swimming pool.  The school’s boarding houses are on campus.  Further playing fields and sports facilities, including a second floodlit Astroturf pitch, can be found on a 40-acre site adjacent to the Prep School and are well used by both Senior and Prep students.

Ashford School, Great Chart:

Ashford Prep School is situated in the beautiful village of Great Chart on the outskirts of Ashford.  The site also includes our Prep School Nursery and in 2018 our custom-designed Stables Nursery opened.  The site includes beautiful playing fields, an indoor swimming pool, flood-lit Astroturf pitch, indoor gym and a well-appointed Sports Pavilion.

The early years provision has its own dedicated and well-resourced accommodation and staff.

Our students

Currently, approximately 500 students attend the Senior School (aged 11 to 18), including around 120 boarders. It is expected that the number of Senior School students will increase over the next ten years and developments are being planned to allow for this growth. Around 500 students also currently attend the Prep School and Nurseries (aged 0-11).

Our location

Ashford is extremely well connected. London St Pancras can be reached by train in 37 minutes thanks to Ashford International Station’s position on the High Speed Line (HS1). The Eurotunnel is a 15-minute drive away, and the Port of Dover can be reached in 30 minutes.
