Job overview

The Portsmouth Grammar School is a leading co-educational school located in the historic heart of Portsmouth. It values the development of the whole person, placing emphasis on both academic achievement and co-curricular involvement. The school aims to support every pupil in order that they might achieve their potential.

The school seeks a well-qualified, and experienced teacher of the Pastoral Curriculum from September 2022. This is a part-time vacancy which will be offered at approx. 0.5 FTE, with some flexibility appreciated, as a temporary appointment for one term, with the possibility of further extension for up to one academic year.

The successful candidate will deliver high quality and engaging lessons on a full range of subjects relevant to the Pastoral Curriculum and will report to the Senior Deputy Head. The PGS Pastoral Curriculum is a nationally-recognised provision that is a significant component of the School’s commitment to safeguarding and fostering our pupils’ physical and mental health, and emotional well-being. Relationships and Sex Education is taught within the Pastoral Curriculum as a core subject across the Senior School from Year 7 to Year 13. At PGS we seek to go beyond the statutory framework by providing comprehensive and outstanding RSE across the school.

There is no requirement for candidates to offer a specialist subject in addition to the Pastoral Curriculum.

Outstanding teaching and learning at PGS are achieved by inspirational and creative teachers with excellent subject knowledge and the ability to use ICT and interactive resources to enhance learning.  Teachers’ planning is informed by assessment for learning, ensuring all pupils make very good progress in each lesson.  Our pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and understand how they can improve using constructive feedback provided by their teachers.

The school offers excellent training and support to teachers at all stages of their career. PGS teachers convey passion for their subject and seek to maximise progress by knowing their pupils well and adapting their teaching accordingly.  We are always looking to develop new ideas and approaches to teaching and are keen to incorporate the particular interests of new members of staff into the existing overall curriculum scheme.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute fully to the pastoral and co-curricular life of the school.

Our aim is for PGS to be a truly inclusive environment in which every person is valued, individuality is celebrated, and there is equality of opportunity for all members of our community. We want to prepare our pupils for life at 25, and to equip them to make an active and courageous contribution to the world beyond school. A dynamic, relevant and engaging pastoral curriculum is an essential part of maintaining our wonderfully supportive learning community and will help learners develop the skills to thrive when they leave PGS.

The post holder will be an innovative, creative, and dynamic educator who will help to take the Pastoral Curriculum to the next phase of its development. The postholder will work with the Head of Pastoral Curriculum to ensure that the Pastoral Curriculum is well coordinated, given suitable priority and weight, appropriately publicised internally and externally and responsive to good practice.

The closing date is noon 4th July 2022. Applicants are asked to note that early applications are welcomed and the school may invite suitably qualified applicants to interview prior to the closing date. Interviews will be held before the end of term on 8th July 2022.
