Job overview

Bolton School Girls’ Division is a thriving, academically selective school, which caters for 1,000 girls aged between 3 and 18 years. It is part of the Bolton School Foundation, sharing facilities, expertise and a magnificent 32 acre campus with the Boys’ Division and offering pupils single sex education in a co-educational environment - ‘the best of both worlds’. The school is situated in an attractive, prosperous part of Bolton with easy access to some of the nation’s finest cities and countryside. In 2019, Bolton School was named as the ‘Times Educational Supplement’s’ Independent Senior School of the Year and was awarded the ultimate accolade of Independent School of the Year. Bolton School pupils are exceptionally well-motivated and well-rounded individuals who gain immense enjoyment and fulfilment from sport. One in five of the pupils attends School on a means-tested Bursary and we aim for that to be one in three by 2030. The pupil community reflects the ethnic diversity of the town of Bolton; the current teaching body is less diverse and there is a desire to improve this through new appointments to the staff body.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic and committed teacher of PE, with the willingness and ability to play a key role in the School’s extra-curricular programme, including after-school and weekend practices and fixtures across all three terms. Expertise in coaching swimming, waterpolo, hockey, tennis and/or athletics are particularly desirable in order to complement the skills of the current members of Department. In addition, skills in either netball or lacrosse are essential, whilst the ability to oversee rounders and gymnastics would be highly useful.

The person we appoint will have experience of delivering A Level PE and will have responsibility for delivering on this subject as it is introduced into the Girls’ Division. Hitherto, girls studying A Level PE have done so in the Boys’ Division. We wish to move provision to the Girls’ Division in Year 12 from September 2021 and then in Years 12 and 13 from September 2022 in order to encourage more girls to pursue this pathway and to cater for increasing numbers in our Sixth Form.

S/he will be a graduate with the necessary academic, sporting and organisational experience to succeed in a post of this standing. S/he will be committed to the welfare and individual development of all the pupils in his/her care. S/he will be fully computer literate. Good communication skills, oral and written, are also essential. A detailed person specification is included with the application pack.

An attractive salary and benefits package is available. Bolton School has its own salary scale which is enhanced to reflect the extra curricular and other expectations which staff are required to fulfil. The remuneration for this post will be on a scale which in 2020/21 lies between £26 352 to £38 891 according to qualifications and experience. There is also an Upper Pay Scale, currently from £40 713 to £43 779 for teachers who have worked for more than six years and have successfully crossed the threshold. These rates are reviewed annually.

The school has a strong commitment to professional development. Teaching staff currently teach a maximum of 45 periods per fortnight (out of a timetable of 60 periods per cycle).

The PE Department is lively and energetic, as well as being committed to developing the girls’ confidence, fitness and enjoyment of physical education.  In the Department the teachers value team work, a sense of humour, and a genuine interest in sport. There are four full time teachers within the Department, including the Head of Department, as well as a part-time colleague who teaches in the Junior School. Each member of the Department has particular interests and areas of expertise across a range of sports, but all support each other with the delivery of the extra curricular programme.

The Department has its own office in the Girls’ Division, next door to the School’s gymnasium. The Department shares some of its facilities with the Boys’ Division, namely the Sports Hall and the swimming pool, both of which are on the main School campus. As far as outdoor space is concerned, the Department makes comprehensive use of the netball courts and lacrosse/ hockey pitch which are a short walk away from the main campus, as well as using the netball courts and the fields which are on the main site.

Bolton School is now one of the largest independent day Schools in the Country, with over 2,300 students in total, as well as over 500 staff.  The Bolton School Foundation also owns playing fields and a School Scout group headquarters building near to the main campus as well as Patterdale Hall, a 60-bed converted Victorian mansion in its own estate on the shores of Ullswater in northern Cumbria, which serves as our Outdoor Activities’ Centre and which is available for use by Departments for school trips.

The Girls’ Division consists of the Senior and Junior Girls’ Schools and a co-educational Infants’ School (Beech House) and Nursery, each housed in its own building. Bolton School girls are academically ambitious and resilient: their behaviour is very good. There are 125 girls in each Year group in Years 7-11, about 100 girls in the Lower and Upper Sixth, and about 50 girls in each Year group in Years 3-6.

An important feature of the School is the huge diversity of the extra-curricular activities on offer to pupils and the school enjoys a considerable reputation for sport, drama and music. Teachers are paid an enhanced salary, above the national scale, in recognition of their contribution towards extracurricular activities in school. Community action and charitable giving are also features of school life and there is an expectation that pupils will take part in voluntary work and service to the community, inside and outside school, particularly as they advance in years. The School was given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2017 in recognition of its work in this area.

Why You Should Choose to Work at Bolton School

Academic Excellence

The curriculum is delivered by a highly qualified, experienced and dedicated teaching staff, who create an industrious but supportive working environment where pupils are motivated to learn. We are an academically selective school and we focus on stretching and challenging every child as we encourage scholarship to ensure each pupil reaches his or her full academic potential.

Academic results at GCSE and A Level consistently place us amongst the top schools in the North of England and often within the top 100 nationally. The vast majority of our students progress on to their first choice university and we have a regular flow of sixth formers to highly competitive courses and universities.

An Incredible Array of Extra-Curricular Activity

Pupils enjoy an incredibly diverse and strong extra-curricular programme, which offers unique opportunities, challenges and fun.

Each year, both Senior Schools offer over 100 clubs and activities and a wide range of options and interests are also available to pupils in the Junior Schools and Infant School. Outside the classroom, we hold an enviable reputation for sports, with pupil success at regional, national and international level. Our aim is to encourage all students, whatever their level, to achieve their personal best. Drama and music are also particularly strong at the School and there are numerous ensembles, choirs and orchestras as well as large-scale regular joint productions.

Pupils undertake many foreign and residential trips, including regular visits to our own outdoor pursuits centre, Patterdale Hall, in the Lake District.

Pastoral

Behaviour at the School is excellent. Each school within the Foundation places great emphasis on its pastoral provision and teachers build strong relationships with pupils. In Senior School, guidance, support and encouragement are provided by the pastoral team, which comprises the Subject Teacher, the Form Tutor, the Head of Year, Heads of School/Section and Deputy Heads. Any problems are dealt with rapidly, either by the staff team or the School Nurses.

There is a sense of purpose and challenge within the School, but this is built on an atmosphere that is friendly, supportive and, above all, happy.  As pupils grow through the School they develop the independence and self-motivation that will allow them to thrive when they leave.

Outstanding Facilities

All of our schools, from Nursery to Sixth Form, are on site and pupils make use of our outstanding facilities set in 32 acres of grounds.

The School combines heritage and modernity. With a history stretching back over 500 years, the School provides a local landmark on Chorley New Road with its imposing pink sandstone buildings replete with Neo-Gothic façade and turrets.

In September 2013, the opening of the new Riley Sixth Form Centre marked the latest phase in an £18m building project which saw the construction of a new state-of-the-art Junior Girls’ School (Hesketh House) and Infant School and the refurbishment and extension of our Junior Boys' School.

"The Levels" provide a running track and numerous high quality football, rugby, lacrosse and cricket pitches and nets. There are netball courts on site and at Leverhulme Pavilion, where there are also hockey and lacrosse pitches (a new sports surface was laid in 2019) and tennis courts, which is a short walk from the School.

The Arts and Conference Centre, opened by Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1993, provides a first-class auditorium and theatre as well as a swimming pool and Sports Hall. Other facilities include a multi-gym, theatres, well-stocked libraries and gymnasiums in both Senior Schools, where there are also outstanding Technology and Science laboratories and Art studios.

Pupils also benefit from time spent at the School's adventure learning centre, Patterdale Hall, which is located on the southern shores of Ullswater in the Lake District.

Engagement with the Community

The School is, and always has been, inextricably linked with the local community. It is a central part of our ethos that pupils engage with the real world and that when they leave the School they will make a positive contribution to society. It is through the interaction with local, national and international concerns that pupils learn about topical issues and develop a sense of their place in the world.

A Thriving Former Pupils' Network

A very active network of old boys and old girls spans the globe.  There are regular reunions both at the School and in major cities and towns throughout the UK. Successful former pupils, both young and old, regularly return to the School where they enjoy sharing their expertise and life experiences with current pupils.

The School has a history of producing top class scholars and achievers and our illustrious former pupils' network spreads across many disciplines. The Old Girls’ Association and the Old Boltonians’ Association include household names such as Sir Ian McKellen, Nigel Short, Monica Ali, Kate Long, Baroness Taylor of Bolton, the Nobel Prize Winner Sir Harry Kroto, Dame Janet Smith, Baroness Morris of Bolton, Mark Radcliffe and Ralf Little.

Diversity

Pupils come from diverse backgrounds and, currently, over 300 pupils receive bursary-assisted places with approximately half of them receiving full fee assistance.

Our secure private coach service covers over 20 routes meaning the School is accessible to a wide area.

Ethnically, the make-up of the School reflects exactly that of the local region.

School Inspection Reports

The School is inspected regularly by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).

The last inspection of the Boys' Division (Junior and Senior Boys' School) found it to be excellent in all areas.

The Girls' Division (co-educational Nursery and Infant School and Junior and Senior Girls' Schools) was described as excellent in all areas with the Early Years' Foundation Stage (0-5 years old) also receiving the top judgement of being "outstanding" in every category.
