Teacher of Physical Education

The Position

For September 2018 we are looking to appoint an inspirational teacher of Physical Education who can teach up to GCSE, Higher and/or A-level PE . The successful candidate should be registered or eligible to be registered with GTC Scotland.

The Department

This post provides an exciting opportunity to join and build upon an already strong and thriving Department which currently consists of two PE specialists and three coaches.

We prepare students for the AQA GCSE in PE, AQA A-Level PE and SQA Higher PE and so knowledge and experience of these courses would be desirable but not essential. It is also expected that the successful candidate will teach a range of curriculum PE and Games as well as take a full part in our Games programme which runs across the week including Saturday afternoons and occasionally Sundays too.

Uptake of PE at GCSE, A level and Higher is relatively popular at Glenalmond with most classes at GCSE including approximately 10-15 pupils, whilst at A level and Higher class sizes are smaller.

All rooms have Digital Projectors with a mix of SMART boards or Interactive Projectors and members of the Department are proficient in their use. The use of mini-whiteboards, AiFL and active learning techniques are encouraged. The Department runs four “drop in” help sessions each week and all PE teachers contribute to the running of this as one of our strategies to further support of our pupils is essential.

The College

Founded in 1851 by William Gladstone and others, Glenalmond College is a fully co-educational boarding and day school, set in the stunning Perthshire countryside and enjoying magnificent grounds of over 300 acres in an unrivalled setting at the foot of the Grampian hills. There are currently 370 pupils at Glenalmond between the ages of 12 and 18. The principal point of entry is at 13 but we have a small Second Form group which is geared towards those transferring at 12 from the Scottish primary system. There are presently five boys' boarding houses and three girls' houses, of which one is a year group house.

The School has excellent academic and extra-mural facilities. In addition to cricket, rugby and lacrosse pitches , there are tennis courts, squash courts, a grass athletics track and a nine-hole golf course, a swimming pool, a sports hall and an all-weather playing surface. The Robin Thomson Theatre building is the venue for our drama and musical productions. The School has a strong CCF contingent, an outstanding Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and a Community Service programme which operates locally on a regular basis.

Broader responsibilities and expectations

We are primarily looking for a teacher of Physical Education although a willingness to be committed to a boarding school ethos is an advantage. The successful applicant will be expected to take a tutor group and to assist with evening duties in a boarding house (normally one evening per week) along with other extra-curricular activities.
