About Alcester Grammar School

This is a rare opportunity to join a unique and happy school, where you can indulge your creativity, refine your skills, and enjoy an atmosphere that respects your professional autonomy. With delightful students, grateful parents and supportive colleagues, teaching doesn't get much better than this.

AGS is a forward-looking, selective state school with academy status and an outstanding record of promoting high achievement. Whilst we have achieved outstanding judgements in our last four Ofsted inspections, we regularly analyse our performance and seek new ways to enhance learning opportunities for our students. AGS is selective at 11-16 but we offer wider access to post-16 students. With over 1300 students on roll, including 530+ in the Sixth Form, we are in a position to offer a wide curriculum; including a choice of two out of three languages in Years 7-9 and a requirement to study a modern language at KS4. In the Sixth Form we offer a choice of around 25 different A levels.

The department has a key role to play in this high achieving school. We encourage all students to make the most of the wide range of sports covered in both the curriculum and extracurricular activities.  The successful applicant will be very well supported throughout their time here, and this is an excellent opportunity to work in a well-regarded, successful department with keen, well-motivated students.

Our facilities include a sports hall, gym/dance studio, a well-equipped fitness room that includes 10 concept 2 ergos and a teaching conference room.  The school has playing fields about 250 metres from the main school buildings on which rugby and football pitches are marked as well as grids.  In the summer there is a 400 metre athletics track, long jump pit and ample space for all other field events.  There are five rounders and two softball pitches.  On site there are also five tarmac tennis courts, one outside basketball court and four netball courts.

OCR A level PE has been taught successfully for over 14 years and we regularly have 2 groups in Year 12 and one in Year 13.  Currently, we have very good results at A level, with 82% of students achieving A* - C grades.

All members of the department teach across the full age range. At KS3 Year 7, 8 and 9 are taught PE in mixed gender groups with games taught as single sex. All activities, including dance, are taught within the KS3 curriculum by all members of PE staff.  In KS4 students are given choice of their activities whilst being advised to select a well balanced programme.  In KS5, students in Year 12 must attend a minimum of one hour per week and Year 13 are encouraged to attend. There is a choice between ‘Performance’ and ‘Recreation’ and activities on offer include rowing, zumba, basketball, rugby, netball, football, yoga, volleyball and much more!  Many of the sixth form students attend more than one session and use the PE area in their non-contact periods.

We have a “sport for all” ethos and some of our proudest moments come from watching the improvement our committed students make over time. We do also cater for those students who want to compete regularly and offer a comprehensive fixture list across a vast range of sports. Our PE staff must commit to maintaining our involvement in extracurricular competition including regular after school and occasional weekend events.  We are part of a close-knit South Warwickshire PE team including 10 local schools.  We attend regular meetings and often host local events as a lead school.

We currently run a number of trips throughout the year, including:

  • Bi-annual overseas sports tour (South Africa 2020)
  • Outdoor adventure weekend to Calshot for our A Level PE students
  • Netball weekends to Northampton (Year 10/11) and Condover Hall (Year 8/9)
  • Barcelona basketball tour for Sixth Form
  • Lee Valley netball trip for Sixth Form
  • Day trips to international hockey, Worcester Wolves basketball

We are looking for someone with energy and enthusiasm to deliver top quality PE lessons, embracing our “sport for all ethos”.  A commitment to extracurricular activities (fixtures and clubs) is essential. Male or Female practitioners are of course equally welcome to apply, and we would strongly recommend a visit to the school in order to see us at work.

About Alcester Grammar School

Rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted in December 2022, AGS is truly a special and unique institution that offers a rich, ambitious curriculum and a broad all-round education, supported by outstanding pastoral care.  When you visit, you will be impressed by a warm and purposeful atmosphere, underpinned by the dedication and talent of the staff and the positive attitude and enthusiasm of the students. As well as our focus on academic achievement, we are committed to enhancing enjoyment and interest in learning in the broadest sense, with a real focus on developing individual talents. Staff give freely of their time, and we offer a comprehensive extra and super-curricular programme, as well as numerous opportunities for trips and visits, both in the UK and abroad.

Our buildings and facilities are extensive and vary from the traditional to the most modern. But wherever you go, you will see us working together to provide a challenging and engaging learning environment so that each student has the opportunity to achieve their potential. Excellent relationships are nurtured so that students are helped as they navigate the challenges of adolescence and mature into young adults. This is a school which students and staff want to come to each day. Thanks to our high standards of behaviour, teachers are free to teach and students who want to learn are able to do so.

As well as academic excellence, we encourage the development of independent, life-long learners; kindness, creativity, risk-taking, personal and physical development, individuality and a spirit of enquiry can be seen in all areas of school life. We regard learning as an active process. Students are expected to contribute, question, challenge and be challenged. Mistakes are seen as key to learning; effort and resilience are valued. At Alcester Grammar School we are serious about providing able students with the very best education we can. Aspirations are high, and it is cool to work hard and succeed. Above all, we work in partnership with parents to turn out “decent human beings” - future citizens who will be able to make a significant contribution to a tolerant, inclusive, democratic and liberal society.
