Job overview

Hampton Court House is the top ISA school for GCSE results (85% grades 9/8/7 in July 2018).  We are number 1 on the ISC’s table of ‘small independent schools’. We are also ranked 1st in our borough for A-Level results and, of the 2625 sixth forms in England with at least ten students taking A-Levels last summer, HCH ranks 10th and is the highest ranked independent school in the London area.

Hampton Court House is situated opposite Hampton Court Palace, adjacent to Bushy Park. We are a fast-growing school, with pupil numbers increasing each year. The school occupies a three-hectare site within landscaped grounds. There are 250 day pupils from pre-school to year 13.

Hampton Court House welcomes pupils from all backgrounds and nationalities.

We seek a charismatic communicator to join our Science Department and to inspire our children with the wonder of physics. We expect a lot from our staff but the rewards on offer and opportunities that a school of this size can provide make Hampton Court House a unique place to work for those looking to make their mark.

There is enormous scope for an enthusiastic practitioner to inspire and motivate as they see fit. We maintain close links with the National Physical Laboratory and run several clubs and events, including a very busy and popular science week. We believe in allowing teachers the space to develop their own teaching style and have a varied in-house CPD programme to encourage cross-curricular collaboration.

A-Level physics remains one of our most popular A-Levels with a large proportion of students continuing to study physics or engineering at university. Relationships between teachers and pupils are incredibly strong and allow teachers and pupils to flourish.

Qualified and newly qualified teachers can apply. We are able to offer a significantly reduced timetable and training support for new entrants to the profession.

Salary – negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications.

If you would like to informally discuss further details of the post, please contact the Head of Science, Abigail Howard, by email (anh@hchnet.co.uk) or telephone (020 8614 0865).

Deadline for applications: 24th February.

Interviews to take place in the week commencing 25th February.

Completed applications should be sent to Kate Harper at kah@hchnet.co.uk.

Hampton Court House is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

A generous fee reduction is available on tuition fees for the children of all members of staff at Hampton Court House.

Nestled in Bushy Park, Richmond-upon-Thames, Hampton Court House is an independent co-educational day school for ages 2 – 18, educating Early Years children in our Pre-Prep School & Nursery, The Little Courtiers, to students in Year 13.

The majority of our pupils elect to stay on to complete their full education with us, enjoying great success in their GCSEs and A Levels: in 2023, 40% of A Level grades were awarded A*/A, resulting in a 100% Oxbridge and Russell Group application success rate. Our GCSE results were equally strong, with 70% of all GCSE grades being awarded A*/A. Hampton Court House was in 2022 ranked in the top 50 independent schools nationwide (The Telegraph) and in the top 10 co-educational independent schools in London (School Owl, 2023).

Our programmes offer an extraordinary education. From the Forest School in Early Years and the award-winning Institut francais LabelFrancÉducation accredited French bilingual programme, to the Nebula Future Researcher’s Programme © in the Sixth Form, Hampton Court House pupils get a head start every step of the way.

We lay the foundations of a lifelong love of learning, and it is important to us that children enjoy being here and look forward to coming to school. In keeping with our ethos, we believe that children need some guided freedom in order to develop their independence and confidence to use their voice. Our non-uniform parkland campus environment, in which staff and pupils alike are addressed on a first-name basis, cultivates an energy where pupils grow in confidence and find themselves.

The school is located close to Hampton Court station, which is 35 minutes from Waterloo and 20 minutes from Wimbledon by train. There are also frequent buses to and from Kingston, Hampton, Teddington and Twickenham, or for staff who drive, there is on-site parking.
