The de Ferrers Trust is a Multi Academy Trust comprising three Secondary Academies and four Primary Academies, currently based in Staffordshire and Derbyshire.

  • Delivering a high-quality education for all pupils
  • Recruiting, developing and retaining high-calibre members of staff
  • Establishing and developing robust governance
  • Ensuring financial probity and viability
  • Developing a highly efficient trust infrastructure and central services
  • Establishing effective systems to support the sustainable growth of the Trust

About Our School

We benefit from a strong local reputation which is the reason we have increased our admission number to 410. Our expansion has been facilitated by the acquisition of a third site for our popular Sixth Form in the town centre. This has led to a re-organisation of our students, with Year 7 and Year 8 educated at the Dove Campus and Years 9-11 at the Trent Campus, which are half a mile apart.

We were delighted by our January 2017 Ofsted inspection which emphasised the outstanding aspects of our work, including high levels of progress and attainment. We value our staff team, and this is reflected in the wide range of professional development opportunities which are offered both internally and externally. In recent years, we have developed an international reputation for learning technologies, becoming both an Apple Distinguished School and Regional Training Centre; we provide a 1-to-1 iPad programme for all students in Year 9-Year 13.

The Department

The Science Faculty is a large, vibrant and innovative faculty consisting of nineteen members of teaching staff supported by six technicians.    The Academy has twenty one laboratories, with six situated on the Dove Campus for Yr7 & Yr8, nine on the Trent Campus for Yr9, Yr10 & Yr11 and six on the Sixth Form Campus for Yr12 & Yr13.  The majority of the laboratories have been refurbished to a very high and modern standard.  The laboratories at the Sixth Form Centre are completely new.  Most of the laboratories have a storage/preparation room near or adjacent to them.  The Faculty continually aims to develop its curriculum to reflect current ideas in Science Education.  Teaching schemes and resources are all shared across the Faculty on Google Drive fostering a collaborative approach.

The aim of the Science Faculty is to provide all students with a relevant scientific education, and the curriculum is based on an experimental approach, where all students are encouraged to make decisions, solve problems, and gain skills in handling apparatus, make measurements and design experiments.   There is focus on engaging students through practical activities and inquiry-based learning.

Students in Year 7 and Year 8 follow a curriculum written by de Ferrers Science staff based on AQA KS3 Science Syllabus. Students are set based upon ability.  Assessment takes place three times throughout the year that include content taught in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Key Stage 4 begins in Year 9 for all students.  All students complete GCSE courses, with approximately 60 of the higher ability students each year following the triple science pathway, completing AQA GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  The majority of students are taught the AQA Trilogy Combined Science course.

There is a strong tradition of 'A' level Science at de Ferrers.  A-Level courses follow the Edexcel Specifications.  CTEC L3 Applied Science is also offered as a vocational course.  All subjects are popular with Biology having 3 groups in each year and Chemistry has 2 groups in each year. APS are above National averages for all subjects.

All students at KS4 & KS5 have been provided with iPads enabling dynamic, interactive and innovative teaching.  All staff are also provided with a laptop and iPad.

The Faculty is well equipped with technology.  All Laboratories have digital projectors with four interactive whiteboards.  Data loggers are available for demonstrations and student experiments.

There are frequent external trips organised by a number of Science staff available for students across all Key Stages.  The faculty has a successful KS3 Science Club and is proactive in inspiring students to study Science on leaving de Ferrers.
