Teacher of Science (1 FTE)

From its beginning in 1922 as the County High School, the present Community College has become a vibrant and successful 11-16 school with 470 students on roll. We are a mixed comprehensive school, serving a rural, beautiful and sparsely populated area of South Shropshire. 

The Community College, Bishop’s Castle is an innovative school which consistently puts high quality teaching and learning at the heart of what it does. Results are strong across all key indicators, with almost all subjects achieving at least national average and many much higher. Our last Ofsted inspection rated the school ‘good’ in each category. We have an excellent climate for learning and students enjoy being here, are respectful and feel safe. 

The College is noted for its warm, friendly atmosphere and it is our vision ‘To Succeed, To Care, To Inspire’. There are excellent relationships between staff, students, parents, governors and the wider community, and the College offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. We also believe that the best way to equip young people for their adult life is to make sure they achieve as highly as possible. The College is a high attaining secondary school and we achieve this by making sure we do the basics well every single day. 

Every student is part of a coaching group which enables the school to give dedicated time to each individual and help them make outstanding progress. We have an enrichment afternoon when everyone participates in a range of sporting and cultural activities that promote wider learning and broadens the experiences of the student beyond the academic curriculum. We believe that educational experiences should extend beyond the classroom and across subject boundaries, so additionally, students are supported by a wide ranging visits programme across all year groups throughout the year. 

We have strong links with the local community and we have a deliberate policy of encouraging community use of College buildings and facilities. The College has a partnership with Macechu Secondary School in Tanzania and operates both an annual teacher exchange and student visit. 

The College has an excellent reputation for achievement and inclusion because the staff care passionately about the well-being of its students. There is a superb climate for learning within the school that is supported by the positive working relationships between staff and students. The school is well supported by parents, and together we try to ensure that all students have the best chance in life. 

Students are encouraged to develop ownership of their learning and take on leadership roles within the school. There are a variety of leadership opportunities available, and successful candidates are elected by their peers for these positions, where they will work directly with staff on behalf of the student body to provide an excellent all round education. 

As a school we believe that in the right environment and with the right work ethic all students can exceed their expectations. We are constantly striving to provide that environment for our students. 

In short, the College is a great place to work and learn. We don’t get everything right, but always endeavour to do so. We don’t mind taking risks and we like to have the courage of our own convictions. Our staff and students are loyal and are genuinely proud of their school.
