Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional individual to join Forest School in the role of Teacher of Mathematics & Science combined .

The science faculty occupies a central place in the academic life of the School with the teaching of science being practically orientated, with an emphasis on skills and processes. A balanced science programme, incorporating most of the features of the National Curriculum, is taught to pupils in Years 7 & 8. Each class has one science teacher. In Year 9, pupils are taught by three specialist teachers and follow a programme of study in preparation for their Science GCSEs. In Year 10, they choose either Double Award Science or any two or all three, of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, following the Edexcel IGCSE course. At A level, both Biology and Chemistry follow the new OCR specifications and Physics follows Edexcel. Each year around 40 students go on to read scientific subjects, including Medicine and Engineering, at top universities. Our public examination results are outstanding.

Whereas, Mathematics is always one of the most popular subjects at A-level and we currently have five Single Maths groups and two Further Maths groups in each of the Sixth Form years.

The Department aims to promote the enjoyment and appreciation of Mathematics beyond the curriculum; this is at the heart of its philosophy. There are two Maths Clubs, for older and younger students, which sweep across a broad mathematical canvas. We have a large entry every year to all levels of the UKMT Maths Challenges with many gaining gold certificates and progressing to the higher rounds. There is a school team in the London-based Hans Woyda Competition and students regularly attend the Maths in Action lectures. We also have a programme of guest speakers at Forest such as Marcus du Sautoy, Matt Parker, and Kjartan Poskitt of Murderous Maths fame. As part of our partnership with local schools we also host other students in our Additional Maths programme for Year 11.

The person appointed will join an exciting and very successful Department, and will make a full range of contributions to the life of the School.

This is an excellent opportunity for a person with the drive and desire to make their mark on this highly important area of Forest School’s academic provision.
