Job overview

Our Science department has transformed student outcomes and succeeded in creating a real buzz around science at Westminster Academy through the relentless energy of staff, its forward-thinking approach to data and the curriculum, and outstanding extra-curricular provision. We are now looking for an innovative teacher to join this dynamic team.

Westminster Academy is an Outstanding International Business and Enterprise academy serving a multi-ethnic community in Central London. Our ethos is grounded in the IB Learner Profile; we encourage intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit and foster a real sense of communal endeavour. The Academy has gained national recognition for its work to improve outcomes for students, and its aspirational and inclusive vision. As a member of the WA community you will have the opportunity to shape the future of the Academy whilst working alongside an exceptionally talented group of teachers and leaders.

In 2018 71% of students achieved 9-4 in GCSE Science, with 100% of Single Science (formerly known as triple science) students achieving 9-4, and our ambitious Science team is keen to continue furthering the department. Current cohorts are benefiting from our collaborative approach towards adapting to the new GCSE curriculum, which has been recognised by exam boards. The Academy is developing the use of technology in the classroom through chromebooks, with Science being the driving force behind the use of artificial intelligence powered learning platforms to offer deeper insight into learning and progress for both the student and teacher. The support of dedicated lab technicians allows for exciting practicals.

International Baccalaureate Science offers teachers specialised training with the IBO, challenging content and the chance to approach science with a global perspective. IBDP Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Systems and Societies are offered to highly motivated students, an opportunity to deepen students’ knowledge of science in a real-life context, not just to pass exams but to encourage students to probe the reasons for learning and the impact of science on the world around them. With the popular introduction of BTEC Applied Science as part of the IBCP, we are proud that more students than ever are continuing to study Science at Key Stage 5.

The department takes advantage of unique partnerships with the Royal Society of Medicine and Imperial College London, students of all ages participating in specialised practical sessions at Lord Robert Winston’s Reach Out Lab. We replicate the opportunity through our successful primary science provision, which dedicates one morning a week to teaching Key Stage 1 and 2 students. Our thriving STEM programme takes students to events and competitions throughout the year, working with organisations such as Big Bang, the RAF’s Rocket Car Challenge, First Lego League, the UK Space Design Competition and TeenTech.

The Science department is a close, collaborative team with an excellent support system; NQTs are welcome to apply. If you can offer an absolute focus on raising educational standards coupled with an infectious passion for learning, then Westminster Academy would like to hear from you.

What we offer:

● An excellent programme of continuing professional development

● Training with the IBO for teachers delivering Key Stage 5

● The chance to shape the future of the subject in collaboration with the leadership team, external education professionals and exam boards

● The opportunity to develop personally and professionally, including mentors for NQTs, structured performance management and opportunities to advance to positions of greater responsibility

● A commitment to staff well being, including access to the local gym, weekly fitness sessions, staff social events and the end of term ‘WA Big Breakfast’

● Perkbox membership, which offers a package of benefits for staff such as retail discounts, savings on gym membership, cinema tickets and free mobile phone insurance
