Job overview

‘Staff morale is high with staff welcoming the open conversations about teaching, and they welcome the ways leaders encourage the evaluation and sharing of what works’ Ofsted 2019

Scalby School is a successful and popular 11-16 community school and in recent years we have become the school of choice in our local community. We were judged ‘good’ by Ofsted in 2019 and in 2019 we celebrated sustained results. Our provisional P8 score places us in the top 20% of schools nationally again. We are proud of our broad and balanced GCSE based curriculum.
Our students are diverse, exciting and talented – and the same is true of our staff.  We put huge emphasis on professional development, most of it in-house, and are proud of the highly effective teaching, which characterises our school.  We are also noted for our ‘can do’ attitude.  We are keen, always, to encourage new and/or young staff to make their mark as soon as they are ready.

We are:

  • A ‘Good’ school in every area as judged by Ofsted in 2012 and in 2019
A school with a well above average Progress 8 score because our students exceed expectations.
  • A school with a clear focus on teaching and learning. We are proud of our bespoke programme of nationally recognised, high-profile seminars designed by our Teaching School and with key note speakers from across the educational world.
  • A leading school in the Scarborough and North Yorkshire area with a real focus on making sure all our staff develop professionally.
A school where the development of the culture and character of our students is at the heart of our curriculum – so that all our students leave school knowing how to conduct themselves in the wider world.

In 2019 our provisional Science Results at Grade 5 and above were:

  • Biology – 98%
  • Chemistry – 93%
  • Physics – 91%
  • Combined Science – 36%

As a result of one of our Science colleagues being promoted internally to the post of Head of Science we are looking to appoint a colleague and teacher to join our Science Faculty.

You would join a Science faculty of seven which is staffed with Science specialists who continue to build year on year in terms of outcomes, curriculum and extracurricular options to our students. A key focus for the department is to build on the strengths and successes seen across English and Maths and as our new teacher you will work closely with the team who will support, develop and challenge you.

As a new teacher we will invest in your future development to help you to become a highly effective practitioner. Ultimately, you will be someone who has the drive and ambition to make sure our students achieve their very best through their teaching craft.

We are proud to work alongside our eight other local secondary schools and we believe we have a unique opportunity for colleagues to grow, develop and thrive in their career as part of our coastal community. For more information on our Coastal Offer and how you can make a difference by teaching on the Yorkshire Coast please visit www.teachyc.co.uk

The date of commencement for this post will be January 2020.  Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date.

Closing date: Monday 23rd September 2019

We reserve the right to close this vacancy early should we receive an overwhelming response.  All candidates are advised to refer to the job description and person specification before making an application.

For an informal conversation about the role, to arrange a visit and for an application pack please contact James Annetts at Resourcing Solutions (North Yorkshire County Council) at james.annetts@northyorks.gov.uk or call 01609 534939 / 07966261249

We are committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A Disclosure and Barring Service Certificate will be required for all posts. This post will be subject to enhanced checks as part of our Prevent Duty.

SCARBOROUGH

Scarborough is a beautiful coastal town on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. It provides excellent trails for coastal walking and mountain biking and many of our students take advantage of the location, enjoying Duke of Edinburgh Award and other outdoor pursuits.

EDUCATION IN SCARBOROUGH

Scalby School is a thriving, oversubscribed 11-16 mixed comprehensive school with 1020 on roll, serving the north of Scarborough and surrounding villages. It is situated in an attractive residential area about 2.5 miles from the town centre. There are 4 secondary schools which serve the Scarborough area, a centralised Sixth Form College and the larger Yorkshire Coast College which caters for those with vocational aspirations.

OUR SCHOOL

Scalby’s motto in “being the best we can be”. It is underpinned by four core values:

1. The school is a learning community.

2. We are ambitious for all our students.

3. Education is more than achieving examinations.

4. Leadership is important at all levels.

Scalby is a calm, purposeful learning environment with a real sense of community. This is exemplified by our commitment to fund-raising for local charities and our strong reputation for sports and performing arts. This includes the school performing at the nationally acclaimed Stephen Joseph Theatre.

Academic results have been consistently good since 2009 with results above the national average. The successful candidate will join a school with an enthusiastic, talented and committed staff and a highly effective leadership team rated “outstanding” by Ofsted.
