From September 2023 Birkdale School seek to appoint an enthusiastic, well qualified, full-time teacher of Spanish (up to A level) who must also be able to teach either French or German (up to at least Key Stage 3 or above). Applications are welcomed from newly qualified or more experienced teachers.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department is a lively, forward-looking and successful department. It consists of seven committed staff, plus native French, German and Spanish language assistants. Housed in a modern suite of rooms, with classrooms, a Foreign Language Assistants' teaching room, two staff workrooms (with networked computers) and a resources room. The department is well resourced, having interactive whiteboards in all classrooms, a sixth form Minilab as well as a full class-size ICT room. All pupils are also provided with Chrome books.

The MFL department has a strong team approach, and we are looking for a new team member who will contribute to the overall strength and profile of Modern Foreign Languages at Birkdale, working closely with the Head of MFL.

Almost all pupils achieve a level 4 or above in a modern language at GCSE. In 2022, there were 80 entries for a GCSE modern language. 97.5% of students in all 3 languages achieved a 9-4 grade. In French, 55% of candidates achieved an 8 or 9 grade, in Spanish, 63% achieved an 8 or 9 grade and in German, 45% of grades were at levels 8 and 9, all compared with the school average of 48%. At A level, 100% of students achieved grades A* to C in all three languages with just under half achieving A/A*.
