We are one of the top-performing colleges in the country, situated in the cosmopolitan seaside city of Brighton & Hove. Working here offers the combination of both a wonderful place to work and a great city in which to live. Our students and staff are colourful, aspirational and hard-working – which is perhaps why 96% of employees would “recommend BHASVIC as a good place to work” and many of our students go on to Higher Education.
We are seeking to appoint a Teacher of Sport to join this thriving and successful department. As a college, we are ambitious for our students and we are seeking to appoint staff who can bring the right blend of flexibility, commitment, energy and vision. We welcome applications from teachers with ideas, enthusiasm and strong teaching ability, who can work within the diverse demands of the department whilst maintaining its recognised strengths and attributes.
The Sport Department
We are a friendly, helpful and enthusiastic team of staff, currently comprising five teachers (four full time), supported by a Sports Development Co-ordinator. The department is located in the BHASVIC Sports Centre which features a new multi surface area, sports hall, two classrooms (both fully equipped with computers), a small fitness room, a testing room, changing rooms, an equipment room and a staff office. Approximately 400 students study within the department each year.
The College has an excellent reputation for PE and Sport. At present our Women's Football has a high reputation in the area and have reached national finals. Our netball, Men’s football, basketball and rugby teams compete in all the main Sussex and national events.
We have extremely high standards for all our students and aim to develop their knowledge, skills and experience in a stimulating and varied learning environment. We look to exploit diverse teaching and learning methods so that all students can access the understanding and knowledge needed to prepare them effectively for examination and beyond. We believe that students should have access to a wide variety of learning experiences to stimulate and fire their interest.
Courses and Specifications
The following courses are currently offered within the department: OCR A level PE, BTEC Sport & Exercise Science (Level 3), BTEC Sport (Level 3), plus a range of portfolio courses offered to second-year students, including Fitness, Exercise and Sport Leaders. In addition, the department runs a number of sports performance courses (men’s football, woman’s football, basketball, netball and rugby), a DiSE (Diploma in Sporting Excellence) programme in basketball as well as a broad range of team and enrichment opportunities for the wider student body.
