Position Information 

Girrakool Education and Training Unit (ETU) is a School for Specific Purposes (SSP) located within the confines of the Frank Baxter Youth Justice Centre. The school caters for a maximum of 90 male students ranging in ages from 15 – 21 years. Classes contain a maximum of 6 students with one teacher and one School Learning Support Officer (SLSO). All students have been committed by the courts to custodial sentences of varying lengths or are on remand awaiting court. Students present with diverse cultural backgrounds and a range of educational needs including behaviour difficulties, mental health issues and diagnosed disabilities. Girrakool ETU has a strong focus on wellbeing and personalised learning that meets the transitional needs of students. The school provides a supportive teaching and learning environment through strong policies and procedures focussed on safety and security. Aboriginal students currently represent approximately 52% of the total school enrolment. The school works collaboratively with Youth Justice and various community agencies in meeting the educational and transitional needs of students.

  
Specific Selection Criteria 
  • Approval to teach  special education and/or experience teaching students with Behaviour Difficulties, Emotional Disturbance (Secondary) and Mild Intellectual Disabilities (Secondary).

 

  • Willingness to teach Mathematics (Years 7-10) with a demonstrated ability to deliver high quality, differentiated programs that meet the individual needs of our students.

 

  • Highly developed, communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with the capacity to work collaboratively and build positive relationships with students, colleagues and key stake holders.

 

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the Departments Aboriginal Education policies, with a proven ability to authentically embed Aboriginal histories and cultural perspectives into teaching programs.

 

 

  
Conditions 

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
