About the role

St Anthony's Catholic College is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Trade Assistant to work within the Technology Department at the Assisi Campus (Years 7-12). This role is a Term Time position completing 30 hours per week for the duration of the 2021 Teaching Year.

Key Accountabilities

Workshop and Equipment Maintenance

  • Maintain workshop equipment: including vices, belts, blades, bearings, welders, metal and wood lathes, milling machines, compressor and other mechanical components
  • Maintain buildings and reset roller doors
  • Help teachers and students maintain neat and tidy workshop environments
  • Check and top up oil levels in machinery and replace every 12 months or as per the manual
  • Help keep battery tools recharged
  • Empty sawdust in hoppers, bags and keep offcuts neat
  • When necessary assist to engage tradesmen to make repairs and get quotes
  • Safety checks on machinery and log repairs
  • Assist in safety compliance eg. safety signage and tags
  • Upskill to be able to perform some service and repairs to laser cutters and 3D printers
  • Regularly sharpen drills, plane blades, bevel-edged chisels and lathe chisels
  • Fabrication of jigs, templates etc.

Materials and Consumables

  • Accept delivery and store materials in racks, including plastics, timber and metal
  • Pre-cut and store project materials for designated year levels
  • Keep an eye on materials and consumables and inform the need for reorder well in advance
  • Pick up goods from local suppliers
  • Setup and assist classroom teachers prior to class where necessary
  • Ensure all rooms have full glue bottles, varnish pots, wax and precut sandpaper
  • Ensure lathes and miller have coolant and swarth trays are cleaned periodically
  • Conduct annual stocktake.

Assist the student’s learning and participation in the College

  • Assist teachers in preparing, implementing and supervising learning programs
  • Be aware of the Classroom Teacher’s expectations of the students in the class and work with the teacher, actively participating in activities, intervening and encouraging students where appropriate
  • Assist individuals or small groups, with activities as part of inclusive teaching and learning practices, supporting the teacher with behaviour management and the development of social skills and classroom skills development
  • Assist students with their personal organisation when required
  • Respond to all students in the classroom in a warm and encouraging manner and build collaborative relationships with the students and respond to individual learning needs
  • Participate in meetings, both internal and external as required.

Learning and Teaching

  • Provide support to teachers in the Technology Department classroom
  • Assist the teaching team with classroom resources
  • Work in partnership with teachers to support student learning which may include:General support to a group of students while the teacher is engaged in focussed teaching
    Provision of personalised support e.g. mobility or communication support, where required
    Assisting students to complete tasks designed by the teacher
    Preparation of support materials and resources
  • Support identified students with learning barriers, to engage in a range of learning activities
  • Collect data for analysis by the teacher - anecdotal notes on performance of task, work habits, behaviour etc., provided to the teacher.

Inclusive Education

  • Assist individuals or small groups with activities as part of inclusive teaching and learning practices, supporting the Classroom Teacher with behaviour management and the development of social skills and classroom skills development
  • Assist students with their personal organisation when required.

Small Group and Personalised Support

  • Communicate with teachers about student progress and areas of need
  • Inform the Assistant Principal Administration (Junior Campus) or Deputy Principal Mission and Culture (Senior Campus) of any welfare issues that may arise with students
  • Develop professional relationships with students based on trust and respect, which utilises a strengths based approach
  • Provide general formative feedback to student on performance during the teaching session
  • Role model behaviour in line with the College’s mission
  • Work in partnership with teachers to implement aspects of learning plans, as identified by the teacher, for groups of students including:Work with the student, under the direction of a teacher, to support the implementation of particular learning goals as identified in the Student’s Learning Plan.
