Job overview

Do you have what it takes to nurture today’s young people and inspire tomorrow’s leaders? Do you have the drive, passion and commitment to deliver outstanding learning and teaching to young people in a disadvantaged community? If so, becoming a Star teacher might just be the best career move you ever make.

About Star Teachers

Star Teachers initial teacher training programmes provide industry leading pathways into teaching and are based within the North West, West Yorkshire and the West Midlands. All Star Teachers training routes include time spent training in at least two schools and lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The optional award of a PGCert is also available via our university partner.

As a Star Teacher trainee, we will work with you to support you to secure a teaching position in a school that will enable you to flourish. Many of our former trainees are now employed across our partnership schools.

In choosing to complete Initial Teacher Training with Star, you also begin a journey of continuous professional development with us. From programmes for early career teachers to leadership learning with the national professional qualifications for leaders, our spectrum of programmes provide a powerful continuum of progression.

Who we’re looking for

Training to teach is both rewarding and challenging. We are looking for people who have the determination to succeed, a commitment to working hard and the ability to work with others. To be a successful trainee with us, you will need excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will be able to show enthusiasm for your subject and demonstrate a strong desire to work with children and make a difference in their lives. You will be willing to listen to advice and act on it in order to continually improve and develop as a teacher. In addition, you will need to have a good understanding of what working as a teacher involves and an awareness of the rewards and challenges that a career in teaching involves. If you meet all of the entry requirements and can demonstrate through your personal statement that you have compelling reasons for wishing to train to be a teacher, you will be invited to interview.

You will have:

• A degree, typically 2.2 or higher.

• For primary trainees, any degree subject will be considered. For secondary trainees at least 50% of the study will be in the subject you intend to teach.

• GCSE grade 4 (previously grade C) in English and mathematics, plus science for primary candidates.

• Good subject knowledge of the National Curriculum.

• Passion and drive to deliver the highest quality of educational standards.

• Commitment to develop as an educator of character.

• Flexibility to adapt to change and ability to think instantaneously.

• Resilience and ability to commit to tasks.

• Good time management and organisational skills.

It would be helpful if you have recent experience with children and learners to confirm your career choice, but this is not a prerequisite before applying to Star Teachers. We look for the potential to train to teach.
