Job Description

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an experienced University Guidance Counsellor to join two growing schools in Singapore. The role will be split 50/50 between EtonHouse International School, Orchard and Middleton International School, Tampines. Both schools belong to the EtonHouse Family of International schools in Singapore. The Post-16 cohorts of both schools are small but growing and this is an opportunity for the right candidate to make their mark in two developing International A Level organisations.

The successful applicant will be expected to give advice and guidance to students and their parents about their International A Level and University/Higher Education course choices and career options. Recent experience of supporting students applying for admission to universities in North America, Australia, the United Kingdom, mainland Europe and Asia is desirable and familiarity with financial aid needs, and scholarship applications would be a benefit. They must also be confident to lead information sessions and workshops for parents and students on systems such as UCAS, the Common App, international university applications and post-results procedures. The ideal candidate would also have experience of developing and implementing a whole school careers programme.

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide information, advice and guidance to students and their parents about IGCSE and International A Level options/University/Higher/Further Education course choices and career opportunities.
  • Manage a small but growing, number of students, across Years 12 & 13 and support them in their process of planning, researching and short-listing universities, ensuring a focus on choosing the ‘best fit’ options based on individual personality, ambitions and learning preferences.
  • Support students in their transition from Year 11 to 12 and new joiners to Year 12 with guidance on International A Level subject selection based on their future aspirations.
  • Explore and recommend financial aid and scholarship opportunities worldwide.
  • Lead information sessions for students, parents, and staff about university systems, procedures and deadlines as well as contribute to assemblies, workshops and presentations to share information and guidance.
  • Provide individual and continual feedback on drafts of students’ personal statements/essays. 
  • Coordinate, manage and review the collection of references for university applicants.
  • Increase the understanding of all faculty staff of the university application process, especially in their roles as mentors and reference writers.Monitor university applications, including processing school-issued support documents, following up with university representatives and keeping families up to date regularly.
  • Contribute communications through newsletters and university information opportunities, to relay deadlines, and other timely information.
  • To offer face to face/online guidance to students and parents on and around results day.
  • To organise careers and higher education events for students and parents, including visiting speakers/university admissions officers.
  • To develop relationships and liaise with Universities and Colleges of Higher Education, visiting academics, business and industry speakers and Higher Education contacts in Singapore and internationally; promoting our students and EtonHouse as a group.
  • Attend major international admissions and guidance conferences.
  • Develop and lead a senior school programme of careers education, including work experience and a careers fair.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with the Principals and teachers on the overall wellbeing and welfare of students.
  • Be a member of the Singapore University counsellors/advisors network.
  • Keep abreast of current global university trends via workshops and webinars.
  • Understand the requirements of National Service (Singapore) and support where necessary.
