The curriculum

The school will follow the British curriculum up to age 16, developing to International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in the sixth form.

NLCS Bangkok

Ethos and Aims

The ethos of NLCS Bangkok will echo that of the London School. Every effort will be made to reflect the ethos of the UK ‘parent’ school, whilst taking into account and remaining sensitive to the unique culture of Thailand.

While ensuring academic excellence and intellectual challenge, NLCS Bangkok will be equally concerned with supporting the development of the whole person and will aim to inspire confidence, individuality and self-esteem in all students.

Curriculum and Pastoral Care

At North London Collegiate schools, academic success is gained through creating an atmosphere of rigorous scholarship, where pupils are encouraged to study beyond the examination syllabus in order to develop their intellectual curiosity and love of their subjects.  We firmly believe that excellent results in public examinations are an outcome of, not the driver for, scholarship.

The pastoral well-being of students is of the utmost importance and good relationships will be fostered between students and staff, as well as between the students themselves.

Extra-curricular

The extra-curricular life of NLCS schools is vibrant, both in academic and non-academic fields. Students participate in a wide range of subject-focused clubs and societies, from weekly book groups to Debating Societies, ‘Young Historians’, to ‘Human Rights Society’ and ‘Model United Nations’.

In the UK, over 40 academic clubs and societies operate weekly meetings and events in order to give students every opportunity to develop their intellectual curiosity, independence of thought and genuine love of subject; there are a large number of student-produced academic journals which reflect the particular interests of these societies. As the NLCS group has expanded, some journals are now produced in a collaborative effort across the schools. Non-academic activities also thrive as the school aims to create an environment in which the whole personality can grow. Extra-curricular Sport, Music and Drama are all of excellent quality and large numbers of students are involved at all levels.

This ethos and broad range of opportunities have already been effectively recreated at our first ‘branch’ school, NLCS Jeju, and also underpin the educational offering at NLCS Dubai; they will be equally central to the offer at NLCS Bangkok and staff should expect to take a full and active role in this aspect of school life.

Working for NLCS Bangkok

NLCS Bangkok aims to be a supportive, welcoming community; not just for students and parents, but for staff as well. There is an extensive induction and CPD programme for all staff, beginning with training at NLCS (UK) in the summer before you take up post and continuing throughout your first year with us and beyond.

Term dates at NLCS Bangkok follow a similar pattern to those in the UK with the long summer break falling between the end of June and mid-August.

North London Collegiate School (UK)

Founded in 1850 by Frances Mary Buss in order to offer an academically ambitious education to girls, NLCS is one the world’s leading schools.

NLCS has pioneered women’s education for nearly 170 years and remains among the highest achieving schools in the UK. Examination results consistently top the UK league tables, and the school has repeatedly outperformed other prestigious schools in terms of Oxbridge success rates.

North London Collegiate School International Ltd

NLCS has set up North London School International Limited to manage its international schools. The International team is co-located with the UK school in London, and supports the overseas schools to ensure that they meet NLCS’s educational ethos, standards and vision.

Unlike many UK independent schools, NLCS has a firm commitment to ensuring close links with its overseas ‘branch’ schools. Every effort is made to replicate the ethos and standards of NLCS (UK), overseas. Wherever possible, staff for overseas schools are interviewed in London and always by NLCS (UK) staff, as well as staff from our overseas schools. All teachers, once appointed, are expected to travel to London for training at the UK school and this is generously funded by NLCS International’s partners. Once an overseas branch is open, it is regularly monitored and inspected by a team of specialists (and involving significant participation from staff at the UK school), and close links are formed through pupil and staff exchanges, joint departmental projects, educational visits and extra-curricular activities, such as video-conference debates and jointly-produced student publications.

As the NLCS family of schools expands, it is expected that partnership activities will expand so that each school in the group develops links with the others. NLCS International also hopes to see staff join the group in order to build their career with the benefit from the many professional development and career-progression opportunities which a group of world-class schools such as NLCS International can offer.

NLCS Jeju

In 2011, NLCS opened its first international ‘branch’ school in South Korea – NLCS Jeju. The school is co-educational offering both boarding and day spaces; it currently has approximately 1,300 pupils. NLCS Jeju offers the IB Diploma to all students in the Sixth Form, regularly achieving an average Diploma points score of 37-38 points to rival top-performing jurisdictions such as Singapore.

NLCS Dubai

The second NLCS overseas ‘branch’ school, NLCS Dubai, opened in the United Arab Emirates in September 2017 and is an all-through co-educational day school, offering the IB continuum of PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme.

NLCS in Singapore

NLCS in Singapore is planned to open in August 2020.

Life in Bangkok

NLCS Bangkok is located in the Bang Na district of South East Bangkok, close to the Mega Bang Na Shopping Mall and mid-way between Suvarnabhumi Airport and the city centre. The area has excellent links via the expressway and a shuttle links Udomsak BTS with Mega Bang Na for those who do not drive. There is a wide range of family-orientated activities available in the local area, from outdoor pursuits at Suan Luang Rama IX Park, to Taco Lake, the Batcat Toy museum, Talad Rot Fai night market and Harbin Ice Wonderland. You can also find a good number of restaurants and bars catering for all tastes in the local area.

Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is a large city known for its ornate shrines and vibrant street life. It is the hub of mainland Southeast Asia and its status as an international city has grown in recent years. It is a rapidly expanding city, and is lauded for its lively entertainment and rich culture. The cost of living in Bangkok compares very favourably with the cost of living in the UK.
