Job overview

St Mary’s and St John’s CE School is seeking to appoint a highly talented and successful leader to the role of Vice Principal at our all through school. This role represents a unique opportunity to lead in an all through school at a critical time of its journey as we continue to grow SMSJ into a beacon for mainstream education.

The Role

This position provides the unique opportunity to engage in leadership of the highest level in an all through school. We are seeking an inspirational leader who will continue to ensure student welfare is directly linked to the school’s curriculum, pedagogical approach and assessment design. Our new Vice Principal will be responsible for refining and embedding a welfare system which reinforces our vision and approach to teaching and learning; therefore, taking the lead role in developing the all through culture and vision.

We know that the quality of a school cannot outstrip the quality of its staff and so we place a primacy on staff growth and development. This post provides the opportunity for an ambitious leader to receive the very best coaching, training and experience in their journey to Headship. As a Church of England school supported by the London Diocesan Board for Schools, we are uniquely placed to develop and guide the new Vice Principal in this next critical step of their career.

The Person

Personal ambition and a desire for furthering the life chances of young people are key attributes required within our new Vice Principal. Previous leadership experience, whilst expected, is not as important as talent and application. Our staff are looking for a leader who is a gifted teacher, with excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity for, pastoral and whole-school operational leadership.

Our School

St Mary’s and St John’s CE school is an all-through school in Hendon, North London, successfully providing high quality education and academic achievement for children and young people from Nursery to Sixth Form. We are proud to be a diverse, multi-faith, harmonious school, with a distinctive Christian ethos, resolute in the belief that "With God, all things are possible". In a changing world our values; Wisdom, Service and Hope, define us, strengthen relationships with our parents and children, and provide guiding principles that enable us to deliver academic excellence and promote self-discipline and resilience.

We very much welcome visits to the school.

Please contact Mrs Casey, PA to the Principal, to arrange a visit.

About St Mary's and St John's CE School - Neale House Campus

Do you want to join a team who believe that ‘Everything is possible’?

SMSJ is the first all-through school in Barnet, opened in September 2014. We are an exciting and vibrant Church of England school. ‘Everything is possible’ is our vision for the whole school community. If you have a can-do attitude then SMSJ is the place for you.

In September 2017 we will have 1,140 pupils from Nursery, Reception, and Years 1 to 10. As we are growing every year (1800 pupils at full capacity including a Sixth Form), there will be a lot of opportunities for promotion and development. You could play a part in leading and shaping the vision and future of our school.

Our children join us when they are 3 years old and can stay and take their A Levels with us. This gives us a close bond with our families and makes for a very strong partnership. Families choose SMSJ because of our unique Christian ethos and our multi faith intake. Respecting each other’s faiths is important to us and builds a strong community.

We have 3 sites: lower, middle and upper which each feel like mini schools. Each is a community and part of the bigger team. We have a continuing professional development programme tailored to your career path, with extra support for newly qualified and experienced teachers new to SMSJ. We don’t grade lessons and have an open door policy. We learn from each other and reflect on our own strengths and areas for development.

We teach a broad and academic curriculum which is enriched through the Performing Arts and Business and Enterprise. It is our vision that children become confident, capable citizens who know how to succeed in life.

Our school has excellent behaviour. Children know what the rules are and parents support the school to achieve them. Staff work as part of a supportive and caring team to ensure the highest expectations in all aspects of school life.  In October, we offer pupils and staff a longer half term.

Our Christian ethos strengthens our community. It shapes our policies and the way that we work. Everyone is valued as an individual and for their contribution to the whole community. We believe that through nurture and inspiration our children will be able to excel in all that they do.

Values and vision

St Mary’s and St John’s CE School’s motto is “Everything is Possible” (Matthew 19:26). All of the school's work is founded on the belief that with God all things are possible. Its ethos is rooted in Christian values, which it aims to both live and teach.

Ofsted report

"Pupils agree that behaviour is good and that bullying and racist and homophobic behaviour is rare. They say they feel safe at school; as one Year 3 pupil said, ‘The gates keep us safe and strangers cannot get into our school.’ They say they can post any concerns they have in the ‘worry box’ and adults will follow these up. They are able to approach members of staff if they have any concerns about behaviour and safety and trust them fully to deal with these matters quickly."
