About Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre

Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre

Welcome to Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre (BYETC).

BYETC is a Department of Education school operating within the Brisbane Youth Detention Centre at Wacol. It is a multi-campus school which caters for students, both male and female from across the state who are either on remand or have been sentenced for criminal offences. The school plays an important role in the community by providing young people in detention with the opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and values that can enhance their capacity to pursue positive choices in the future.

Campuses of BYETC:

  • Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre
  • West Moreton Education and Training Centre (WMETC)
  • Vocational Training Queensland (VTQ)
  • Inner City Watch House

The BYETC and WMETC campuses facilitate a specialised education and training curriculum tailored to the needs of the young people in detention. Classes take place in purpose-built facilities with a low teacher to student ratio. With students ranging from 10 to 18 years of age, each campus offers a varied curriculum. Alignment to the Australian Curriculum with a particular focus on literacy and numeracy forms the foundation for students in the Junior School (Year 5 to Year 9). In the Senior School (Year 10 to Year 12 and beyond), vocational education certificate courses including certificates in literacy and numeracy are offered and may contribute to a student's Queensland Certificate of Education.

Unlocking learning through literacy and numeracy

The Brisbane Youth Education and Training Centre (BYETC), through its partnership with Vocational Training Queensland (VTQ), is supporting learners in the youth justice system and beyond to develop essential literacy and numeracy skills through the development of customised learning materials in the General Education for Adults (CGEA) course and certificates.

The certificates in General Education for Adults are accredited courses developed to address the education and training needs of learners who have left secondary school early and need to improve their literacy, basic maths and general education skills.

Course materials have been developed to support learners to complete the qualifications using a blended or mixed-mode approach meaning students are required to complete activities and assessments in both a work journal and in the Coassemble learner management system (LMS).

BYETC has been working with Coassemble to develop engaging customised courses supportive of learners who have previously struggled with a mainstream curriculum.

It is our aim that students become increasingly independent and are able to complete more complex language and literacy tasks as they progress through the course levels. As a significant proportion of our students are from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, there is a strong emphasis on embedding culturally appropriate images, text and perspectives in all student work journals and electronic resources.
