iGCSE exam Q5 lesson with 'Beyond the Sky and Earth'

Here’s a lesson and teacher’s notes for teaching Q5 (the comparison question) on ‘Tokyo Pastoral’ (unseen text) and ‘Beyond the Sky and the Earth’ (from the Edexcel iGCSE syllabus)
The lesson powerpoint prompts students to make notes and sugegsts how to write Q5.
The hand-written teacher’s notes are colour coded and suggest lots of areas that students might usefully compare.
‘Beyond the Sky and the Earth’ has only been used on the iGCSE exam once, in 2021, when there weren’t many takers for the exam, so it is my prediction for summer 2026.
This lesson is particularly useful if you are planning to use the 2021 paper as a mock but would like to prepare your students for using ‘Beyond the Sky…’ with an unseen. I found ‘Tokyo Pastoral’ by Angela Carter has a good number of comparative ideas in it. A few readers or school may find the references to ‘blue movies’ and ‘brothels’ in Carter’s text unsuitable, so you may want to edit the text you give to students.
