Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Japanese Lyrics)

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Japanese Lyrics)

Every two years, our school puts on a Summer Carnival where each year group gives a performance based around a different country. Last year, Year 3's country was Japan. The children learnt how to sing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' in Japanese. They also performed a contemporary dance and wore traditional Japanese clothes and accessories. It was a fantastic event and the children loved every minute of it. I have uploaded the lyrics in case you would like to try something similar at your school. This link takes you to the music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGgOKEaMWZU

The Cultural History of Japan: A Chronology

The Cultural History of Japan: A Chronology

This is a chronology in summary form of twenty-two of the key events in the cultural history of Japan with dates and key events from the last 5000 years. I think this resource is of use for a teacher's own research or to use as a student activity. At the end of the document there is a suggested activity where students can use the information to create a timeline of Japanese cultural history. I have my students follow the directions as listed at the end of the chronology. The work in selecting and compiling this chronology is my own. My main research resource for this information was from Morton and Olenik's book Japan: Its History and Culture. The timeline was developed, focusing on events that help address issues of culture, transmission, and geography.

Passport to Japan & its Culture

Passport to Japan & its Culture

Ideally suited to students from Yr 3 upwards, this Multiple Intelligences assignment requires students to complete 8 of 16 tasks over a 10 week term. Teachers will need to download the assignment and print double sided, then fold in half. Select coloured card/heavier paper for the students to create their "passport" - extending them by using kana. Staple in the centre. As each task is completed, a sticker is placed on that page. Suitable Japanese icons/pictures are readily available on the web if the accompanying worksheet of stickers doesn't suit. Some students will seek to do more than the 8 tasks and I would suggest that this be counted as extension work. A marking sheet is also included.

The Snow Witch - A Japanese Tale of Yuki Onna

The Snow Witch - A Japanese Tale of Yuki Onna

This illustrated text is of an old Japanese ghost story from a book of Japanese folk tales called the 'Kaidan' that was published in the early 1900's by the writer, Lafcadio Hearn. I have designed this as a multi-media resource with a Teacher's Guide providing links to sites that provide detailed history of the genre along with more examples of the 'Kaidan' type of Japanese mystery tale. In addition, there are links to a haunting animated video of the story and a version that provides an added quiz and question prompts within the video itself. 56 pages This resource contains; 1. A Teachers Guide outlining the possible classroom uses of the text and links to other useful sites and videos. 2. An illustrated full color 12 page PDF version of the story that contains the full text, a set of comprehension questions and character analysis and point of view writing prompts for ELA students. There is also a short history of the Kaidan genre along with comprehension questions and a writing prompt for Social Studies students. 3. The same PDF text in black and white and another version with white background for easier printing. 4. An ePub version for teachers use or for students with tablets. 5. A student answer's PDF for the text questions. 6. An online Zaption video that contains an animated video of the story with embedded questions that can be used as discussion prompts by the teacher in presentation form. (Zaption sign up is recommended for this). The story is about two men stuck in a snow storm who take shelter in a small hut. While sleeping there they are visited by a woman in white who proceeds to kill the older man with her icy breath, but spares the young boy with the warning that he must tell no one of what he has seen. Later, she turns up in his life as a beautiful young woman, and the unsuspecting young man marries her. They have a happy life with many children until one night he decides to tell her the story of the woman of the snow..... The story is in the public domain, as are all of the ukiyo-e images I have used. Some of the others are m own work.
