Valentine (Carol Ann Duffy) and I wanna be yours (John Cooper Clarke)

Valentine (Carol Ann Duffy) and I wanna be yours (John Cooper Clarke)

This whole lesson (with slides you can print out for worksheets) explores the idea of extended metaphors and figurative devices in both Valentine - by Carol Ann Duffy - and I wanna be yours - by John Cooper Clarke. This then culminates in students creating their own valentine poetry. When I used to teach this lesson, I would actually bring an onion into class and cut it up for the initial reading of ‘Valentine’ - made a stink but definitely got my students interested! Hope you enjoy and please feel free to browse my other resources - a lot of which are free as I understand us teachers work far too hard already!

PARCC Aligned Practice Test Activities Poetry and Informational Text (Grade 7) (Prove IT 2.0)

PARCC Aligned Practice Test Activities Poetry and Informational Text (Grade 7) (Prove IT 2.0)

Included is a PARCC -Aligned practice test including informational text and poetry comparison. The questions involve the following areas: - Main idea - Two Part questions (Parts A and B) - textual evidence - Text structure - theme - context clues - similarities and differences What makes this activity so much more valuable is that is includes the Whole Brain strategy of Prove It 2.0 strategies. This technique encourages the students to indicate whether EACH ANSWER CHOICE is correct or incorrect based on the text. The students must write a response in their own words for all answer choices. This strategy allows the students to think about their way of thinking through verifying or justifying their answer choices with textual evidence. This technique has worked beautifully for my students and has been proven to improve standardized test scores. Educator TIP: It is even more beneficial for the students to talk about their answer choices with higher order thinking discussion stems: " I think that answer choice A is incorrect because, according to the text, ________________________________. " In essence, seeing, thinking, and speaking helps to bring about a critical thinking experience, that eventually, with practice, become an effective tool in comprehending complex text.
