Sampling techniques

A detailed lesson presentation (61 slides) that consists of 2 lessons and accompanying differentiated worksheets that guides students through the different sampling techniques that are used to estimate populations in plants and animals and gives help and explanations with the mathematical elements. Lesson 1: The lesson begins by challenging the students to work out that counting every plant on a field is an impossible task and that sampling is the method that should be used. Students are shown how to use the calculation to estimate a population size using a metre squared quadrat before being guided through doing the same calculation but with quadrats of different sizes. Key mathematical skills such as calculating the mean are involved and step by step guides used to ensure that students can access this work. There is a focus on collecting valid, reliable data so students will see how both random and non-random sampling can be carried out Lesson 2: This lesson looks at other sampling apparatus other than the quadrat and how this along with identification keys can be used to sample small animals. Both lessons contain regular progress checks so that students can assess their understanding of the topic as well as quick competitions to maintain motivation and engagement. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but can be used with KS3 and A-level Biology students who are recapping on the ecology topic.

Communicable diseases

A highly detailed, fun and engaging lesson presentation (77 slides) that consists of two lessons that look at the four pathogens involved with the spread of communicable diseases with examples and explores how these diseases are spread and how this can be prevented. Lesson 1: The lesson begins by recalling the meaning of a communicable disease and then looks at the pathogens involved. A quick competition is used to come up with the name of the 4th pathogen, protists, as it is unlikely that students will have encountered this before. Moving forwards, each of the pathogens is explored and the diseases that they cause ( in both animals and plants) Lesson 2: This lesson looks at the different ways that diseases can be spread between animals and how to prevent this. Students are challenged to think of the different methods and there is focus on key terminology such as vectors which they will have met in a different context in Physics. Both lessons contain regular progress checks so that students can assess their understanding and there is a set homework included as part of lesson 1. This lesson is designed for GCSE students

This is a series of 10 projects (all of which can be found individually in my shop) to cover all KS3 content before beginning GCSE. It is intended to take 1 term, with each project taking 4 to 6 lessons. This fits with schools wishing to start GCSE part way through Y9. The projects could also be used to consolidate or support throughout KS3 and GCSE depending of the needs of the groups.
