Magic Carpet Ride - display picture, hand-drawn

Magic Carpet Ride - display picture, hand-drawn

This serene scene will appeal to your children’s imagination, as they put themselves in the place of the happily gliding children. With the ocean, palm trees and setting sun below, and the soft, clear sky around them, this fantastical image will inspire your class to write, draw, discuss or enact the concepts conveyed. It could be used in combination with my magic mat poetry-writing sheet, for instance, available in my shop here. It will also brighten up a dark corner, of course!

THE EPIC 1844-45 EXPLORATION EXPEDITION OF LUDWIG LEICHHARDT ACROSS THE AUSTRALIAN SAVANNA

THE EPIC 1844-45 EXPLORATION EXPEDITION OF LUDWIG LEICHHARDT ACROSS THE AUSTRALIAN SAVANNA

The German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt joins the group of European explorers who made long and arduous journeys across the “Great unknown” interior. Well - unknown to Europeans and colonists with settlements along the coastline. Join his epic exploration from Moreton Bay (Brisbane) to the very remote colonial settlement of Victoria on the shores of Port Essington. Follow his progress by map and description. Assist your students to become aware of the dangers faced. Understand why this long journey which was expected to take 4-6 months ended up taking nearly 14 months. Find evidence along the route by photographic inclusions. Recognise the challenges faced by members of the exploration party. Find out why the ultimate success of this exploration depended on the skills of two aboriginal guides in the group. Find out how Leichhardt contributed to the naming of features within the Australian Savanna. Work out why this expedition has been given the title of “epic”. The description, maps and photographs provide a record of the journey that had been labelled as “a failure” was to be praised as “a success”. The attachments are provided for the provision of hard copies. Your students can develop their own expedition map and the screens are numbered so that answers to the set questions can be located and filled in. You may decide to use the attachments as you screen the pages in class or you may used them as check questions when the unit has been completed. Ludwig Leichhardt is generally less well known than Burke and Wills and McDouall Stuart but this expedition places him alongside them in terms of length, difficulty and achievement. Find out why. This unit can lead on to one of the great mysteries of Australian European exploration - the mystery surrounding the disappearance of all members of Leichhardt’s exploration group on the 1848 exploration attempt to reach the Swan River Settlement from Moreton Bay (Brisbane).

Shelf Life Pack: Chelsea Physic Garden

Shelf Life Pack: Chelsea Physic Garden

https://www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk/teaching-resources Shelf Life The Shelf Life resource pack is a cross curricular resource for teachers of pupils at all ages. Shelf Life is a collection of plants growing in the packaging of foods, drinks, cosmetics and medicines. Examples include a tomato plant growing from a bottle of tomato ketchup, wheat from a bag of bread, an orange plant from a carton of orange juice or a willow sapling from an aspirin bottle. It is a reminder of our reliance upon nature and prompts you to ask the question: How many plants have I used today? 15 years ago, Shelf Life was devised by Chelsea Physic Garden’s Education Department to illustrate the diversity of the plant kingdom and also to make the link between our everyday products and their plant origins. Many of the younger visitors to Chelsea Physic Garden (around 2,500 per year) are very surprised – and often quite disgusted – that their meals may have come from plants. When they see tomatoes in a ketchup bottle, potatoes growing in a crisp packet and mint in a toothpaste tube, the message sinks in. Our Shelf Life Resource Pack includes: • Information about 22 plants in our everyday lives - with plant profiles and tips on how to grow them and create your very own display • Games to try out • Curriculum-linked ideas and activities (e.g. the history of slavery and the evolution of packaging) • An extensive bibliography of links and suggested reading We have split the pack into 5 volumes This resource aims to encourage schools to grow their own Shelf Life and provides information about how to do this. There is background information on some easily-sourced and commonly found plants (growing tips and profiles - including all sorts of facts - botany, history, geography, food and nutrition and links to art, music and literature) in Volumes1, 2 and 3. In Volume 4 there are suggestions of classroom based activities to link Shelf Life with the curriculum at every key stage. In Volume 5 are suggestions of classroom based games to link Shelf Life with the curriculum at every key stage. • Volume 1: Aloe to Citrus (PDF/9.5MB) • Volume 2: Cotton to Peanut (PDF/7.6MB) • Volume 3: Pineapple to Wheat (PDF/8.8MB) • Volume 4: Activities section (PDF/7MB) • Volume 5: Games section (PDF/5MB) We welcome your feedback on these.

Around the World/Cultural Activity-Ghana Music

Around the World/Cultural Activity-Ghana Music

Hands down my students’ favorite lessons that we do in my classroom are the “Magic Airplane Ride” lessons. We get in our airplane, fasten our seatbelts, and then take off and visit other countries while learning about the music, art, customs, food, and culture of each country. The students look out for red and yellow stars, which take you to locations in Google Earth or to videos. This is a great resource for multicultural and “Trip Around the World” lessons. These lessons are popular with all my students-kindergarten through 5th grade. This lesson is a trip to Ghana. Each lesson includes links that take you to locations in Google Earth so the kids can see the places. Once you land, click and drag on the screen to drive down the street and see the city. Sometimes the airplane can even go inside buildings! There are also video links throughout the lesson to make the topics covered come to life by letting the kids see and hear what they are learning about. Each video will open in a ViewPure window so there will not be any advertisements at the beginning of the video. Covered in this presentation: • The location of Ghana, and the capital city • The president and president’s house • The flag of Ghana and the coat of arms with its meaning. • Languages • Noted sites in Ghana with Google Earth links. • Clothing, including kente cloth, its history and how it’s made • Ghanaian foods • Music and dance • Obwisana-Children’s song game with links to learn the song and the game • Tue Tue-Children’s song with links to learn the song and the dance.

Orienteering lesson

This recourse pack was put together for a group of none specialist teachers to deliver as an introduction to orienteering in Margam Park, South Wales. The slides have descriptions and images and the worksheet is based on an orienteering trail in Swansea called Clyne woods and requires pupils to activate their prior knowledge of map reading skills from their geography lessons. The lesson was used for the whole of year 9 and was differentiated up and down to suit the needs of the class by the teacher delivering the information. This presentation does not include how to read a compass and there are some measurements involved which may need adjusting to suit the class, but can also offer an opportunity to include a numeracy focus too.

Time Travel! An Inquiry Based Maths Adventure

Time Travel! An Inquiry Based Maths Adventure

Get ready to take a journey of adventure around the world and across time with this inquiry based math project. It offers collaborative learning and hands on inquiry requiring the children to solve problems, think critically and apply their knowledge of elapsed time, measure and scale, area, place value and fractions as they select their countries to visit and travel back in time exploring historical moments around the world. Text is included with data that the children will have to identify in order to solve the problems. Research will be necessary as the children have to know the location of their countries, capital cities as well as facts and figures with each historical marker or event. Math becomes authentic! UK & USA spelling included. But, before they even set off on their adventure, they have to design their own time travel machine! This was designed to be a mixture of collaborative group work and independent work but of course you can opt to do either or all. I prefer to have the children work on the pages individually before they compare their designs and work together as a small group to collaboratively create the map, their group plan of the time machine and planning their presentation. It usually takes me about 2 weeks to complete the entire project. It culminates in a class presentation of the facts found and reasoning as to their plan, design of their team’s route, their discoveries and their designed machine. Comparing and contrasting each group’s work helps with critical thinking too and communication skills. Wholly differentiated, ( Task B cards are less challenging) you can use it as a summative assessment tool of the skills and standards included. It can be created as a work booklet or in a binder, with a front cover included, being used as a goal setting pre assessment for the children. Mix and match the pages to suit your students’ needs. This inquiry based math packet is easy to print and go. I designed it for my IB PYP 5th grade class. It can be used 4th – 6th grade too. You will find the following skills and standards ideally suited for the IB PYP Phase 4 and CCSS Math for 4th and 5th grade: Place value Fractions: equivalent fractions/simplifying Measure: using measuring tools, elapsed time, area and scale Ratio tables Geometry: identifying polygons and angles And more. Make math fun, engaging an authentic! You can find many more inquiry based learning tools in my store and on my blog. Enjoy! Susan Powers

Journey to Refuge : scheme of work

A set of 12 lessons covering geography, maths and writing objectives, based around refugees. After identifying different countries and geographical features, children plan a refugee’s journey from Syria to the UK, and then ‘go’ on those journeys, using tablets and maps to help them. Later on, children look at a real refugee’s diary entry, identify the features and then write their own diary entry based on their experiences. Finally, children look at statistics about refugees and have an additional session on how to use the eight point of a compass. Folder includes lesson plan resources for each lesson, differentiated sheets where required, and a powerpoint with slides for al 12 sessions. Originally planned for year 5 children, but would be great for UKS2/KS3 in general.

Write it on this poster so you can see what it is that you are moving towards, so you don’t forget. 2 - ‘Attitude Rucksack Poster’ - When going on a journey towards our dreams, just like Ernie, it’s important to pack a bag with all the things we need for our journey. But what about our attitude? What attitude do we need to reach our dreams and goals in life and in the classroom? Together think about what words you would need in order to have the right attitude to be a determined dreamer, and then choose the most important ones to put in the class ‘Attitude Rucksack’. Use the poster image to write up the words to be reminded of them everyday. 3 - ‘Determined Dreamer Poster’ - On the journey towards our dreams it’s important to know that there will likely be challenges along the way, bumps in the road, things that will make us want to give up, will cause us to think we cant do it and to question/doubt why we even decided to do it in the first place. Decide together as a class your ‘Determined Dreamer Phrase’; the phrase you can say to yourself and to each other when it just get so tough that you want to give it all up. Use a classroom activity and display on walls, or can be used in PHSE lessons. Posters are based on the book; ‘Ernie Gonzales: The Determined Dreamer’, and the main theme of the book, which is available on Amazon or Etsy, however these resources are not dependent on the book.
