A lovely lesson (could easily be several) lessons for GCSE students to revise the international relations unit especially for OCR, but would work really well with AQA and Edexcel modern world syllabuses. The ppt explains the variety of tasks - Various slides should also be printed out as instructions for each table. Some of the tasks are also on the slides, but others are extra attachments such as the explain away game and the timeline cards. This is a good way to keep yr 11 engaged and proactive during those last few lessons.

It is a well resourced and extensive guide that summaries and analyses the significance of major events during the growth of the US as an economic and military superpower during the Cold War. This resource also includes significance analysis of the Civil Rights movement during these years and the response of each president to the push for desegregation in the north and south. It is well aligned to GCSE and A-Level but it has been primarily used for the AQA A-Level Part 1. There is also a list of potential practice questions that students can attempt in otder to prepare for examination on the topic. This resource can be printed out and made into a booklet for class or independent use.

Written in Publisher for A3 printing, the document can be edited for printing as a PDF in A4. Fidel Castro comes to power following the Cuban Revolution. Cuba aligns itself with the Soviet Union and the government starts nationalising American interests, resulting in the United States imposing an economic boycott, and the failed Bay of Pigs Invasion. Following the detection of Soviet medium range missiles stationed in Cuba, the United States imposes a blockade on the island, and the Soviet Union mobilises for war. The Cuban Missile Crisis is eventually resolved through secret negotiations, in which the United States and the USSR agree to withdraw missiles from Cuba and Turkey respectively. Interviewees include Fidel Castro, Walter Cronkite, Pierre Salinger and Theodore Sorensen. The pre-credits scene has interviews of Fidel Castro, Robert McNamara and Anatoly Dobrynin explaining how close they felt the world was to a nuclear holocaust.

This led to riots in Budapest and the replacement of Rakosi with Imre Nagy. Nagy announced a set of proposed reforms – authorised release of political prisoners, ended 1 party state. 1000 Russian tanks were sent and 4000 Hungarians killed fighting the Russians. Nagy executed. Consequences: • 200,000 Hungarian refugees fled into Austria. • Russia stayed in control behind the Iron Curtain. • People in the West were horrified. • Became clear that Western Europe would not come to the aid of Eastern European countries. • Khrushchev’s position became more secure in the Soviet Union. • Example that Warsaw Pact members should do as they were told by Russia.
