The World News Crossword - August 5th, 2018

The World News Crossword - August 5th, 2018

The World News Crossword - August 5th, 2018 is a 6-page PDF document made up of 4 puzzles based on the events of last week’s news. It’s a quick and simple process to download the resource and it can be stored on a flash drive ready for printing. All for just £2. What’s in this week’s document? (1) A crossword based on the events of last week’s news, (2) A search & cloze puzzle giving a little more detailed explanation of Zimbabwe and the events leading to last week’s election, (3) A crossword all about Zimbabwe - where is it? What are its neighbouring countries? What are its lakes, mountains, and rivers? (3) A crossword all about India which was also in the news last week. The puzzle usually takes a class about 30-45 minutes to complete, leaving some time for discussion on some of the more interesting news stories. The puzzle seems to work best when done in pairs or small groups, to generate discussion. The goal of course is to have students learning more about the world around them, and to prompt them to ask questions, especially ‘why…?’ What happened last week? On Lombok (in Indonesia) about 500 stranded tourists were rescued after an earthquake, but then another very large earthquake struck about a week after the first, prompting. a tsunami warning for the region. Wildfires continued in California and Europe experienced a heatwave. Students in Bangladesh protested for better traffic and street safety. Evidence of a 2000 year old library was uncovered in Cologne. A plane crashed in Mexico. A helicopter crashed in Siberia. And a plane crashed in the Swiss Alps. A new government was elected in Zimbabwe and 6 people were killed in protests following the result. The boys who were rescued from the cave in Thailand returned home after their 9 days as novice Buddhist monks. And someone kidnapped a shark, disguised as a baby in a pram, from an aquarium in Texas.

Around the World Summer Camp- DAY 1 (Geography, KS2 KS3, EFL)

Around the World Summer Camp- DAY 1 (Geography, KS2 KS3, EFL)

This was originally taught to Korean Middle School EFL students for a fun art and craft/cooking camp however it is written entirely in English. The aim of this summer camp is for the students to have fun and to learn about different countries and cultures around the world. Each day will focus on a different country and we will learn some facts, look at famous places, food and do an art and craft activity associated with the country. At the start of each day students will guess the country. When I reveal the flag they must copy it onto their ‘passport’ sheet. If students behave well or win a task they receive a sticker on their passport. The student with the most stickers at the end of the camp will win a prize. Day 1: Introduce the summer camp and different monuments and buildings around the world. Today focuses on lots of games and team building activities so that everyone gets to know each other.  Activity 1: Icebreaker Students are given a ‘passport worksheet where they write their name, age, favorite food, favorite place in Korea and three places they would like to visit in the future. They should complete this quite quickly 5-10 minutes. When everyone has finished I pass the ball and when they catch it the student must say something about themselves and introduce themselves to the rest of the class.  Team game (1): Guess where it is from Students look at the famous buildings/monuments from around the world. In teams they must guess which country they think it is from. The team with the most correct will win travel stickers in their passport.  Team game (2): Build a tower In teams students have 30minutes to build a monument/tower using only dried spaghetti, peppero sticks and marshmallows. They have to work together as a team and at the end they can win points based on how tall, how wide and how unique their building is. The winning team gains stickers for their passport.  Lunch Students are given cooked sausage, cucumbers, crackers and cube cheese. Individually on their plate they have to cut slices and try to build the tallest tower. The person with the tallest ‘tower’ wins a sticker for their passport. They can then eat these and the snacks from earlier for lunch.  Team game (3): Jenga race In teams students take it in turns to race forwards and take a block out of the jenga tower. They must then run back to their team and try to build another structure. The team with the tallest structure at the end (whose original building hasn’t fallen over!) are the winners and gain stickers for their passports.  Art and Crafts Using clay, students must make a small keyring or magnet in the shape of a famous building or monument from the lesson. Seoul Tower, Eiffel Tower, Pyramid, Big Ben etc.

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece: Primary resources

The Archaeology of Ancient Greece: Primary resources

Introduction to the project and teaching resources Within this folder you will find a series of documents about Ancient Greece with a focus on daily life and houses. All of these materials are designed for cross-curricula teaching and cover the English, History, Maths, Science, Geography, and Art subjects of the National Curriculum. Please do not feel that you have to use all of these files and the associated activities, as they may not all be appropriate for your teaching or timetable. The materials include both background information to the subjects covered, and actual teaching materials, including various activities. These resources were conceived together with the intention of providing teachers with all of the information they would need to teach a topic on daily life in Ancient Greece. Thus some of the activities will require you, as the teacher, to have engaged with all of the background materials within your planning, even if you do not use them directly in your lessons. For example, presentation 20, which provides information and activities for the Science curriculum on Vision and Light, requires you to have read about Greek houses and the family, which is found in presentations 05, 07-10 and 14. All of the teaching activities have been designed to support the students’ core knowledge and skills as outlined in the National Curriculum. For example, presentation 01 covers the topic of archaeology as a discipline, including what Classical archaeologists study, and where they undertake their excavations. Within this presentation (01) there are two specific activities on slides 3-6. The Kmz* file (02) (for use in Google Earth), and Presentations 03 and 04, extend this topic into Maths and Geography activities that can be done both in and outside the classroom. These activities may be followed by presentation 05, which focuses on the settlement (Olynthus) that provides the basis of many of the other presentations about specific issues regarding houses, daily life and the family in Ancient Greece. Presentation 06 is a LEGO Education activity that is linked to presentations 01 and 05, and develops students’ work in the English, Art and Design subjects of the National Curriculum.
