Lesson 3: Colonisation of Africa - KS3 Geography Africa Unit 2017

Begin with: - A review of Africa quiz and mention award winners. Then: 1. Go through the definitions of key terms, coloniasation, colony and imperialism. Pupils to match up correct definitions and write it down. 2. Go through the context of colonization in Africa. 3. Followed by pupils completing word fill task with regards to the context. 4. Pupils read through statements of the effects of colonisation and arrange these statements into advantages and disadvantages. Could complete this in groups to encourage discussion. 5. Pupils complete writing task, the effects of colonisation on Africa. 6. Once complete, MAS to think about other key questions, if Africa wasn’t colonised and their overall view about colonisation. 7. Pupils move onto map work “who colonised Africa” Shade and label countries colonised by Britain. 8. Extension: do the same but this time shade and label countries colonised by France. 9. H/W: Pupils play simulation game “Scramble for Africa” and complete the follow up worksheet.

This set of resources and activities covers the content from the OCR A Level Geography specification as follows: There is a relationship between physical factors and the prevalence of disease which can change over time. • Global patterns of temperature, precipitation, relief and water sources and how they affect patterns of disease. • Physical factors can influence vectors of disease such as the prevalence of mosquitoes in warm, humid areas close to water sources. • How seasonal variations influence disease outbreaks such as periods of drought or monsoon rains. • Climate change provides the conditions for emerging infectious diseases to spread to new places and new hosts such as West Nile virus, tsetse fly and tick seasons. • The conditions for zoonotic infectious diseases such as bird flu or rabies to establish and spread from animals to humans. The reading handouts are structured to cover each of the above bullet points in detail, and evaluative links are made throughout. Th activities are designed to challenge students to draw together knowledge from these readings (and can also be used in conjunction with Part 1a - also on TES). Many different maps and statistics are included - no extra research/resources would be needed.

These resources form reading packs and activities to go with Part 1a of the OCR A Level Geography specification for Paper 3: Geographical Debates, focusing particularly on the Disease Dilemmas topic. The content covered in the reading packs is as follows (as in the specification): Diseases can be classified and their patterns mapped. The spread of diseases is complex and influenced by a number of factors. • How diseases can be classified, including infectious and non-infectious, communicable and noncommunicable, contagious and non-contagious, epidemic, endemic and pandemic. • Patterns of disease, including global distributions of malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, diabetes and cardio-vascular disease. • Disease diffusion and spread to new areas (Hägerstrand model), including the phases of diffusion, physical and socio-economic barriers. Five different activities are included within these resources, including a card sort of key words, low tariff examination question practice, and more evaluative thinking skills. Evaluative comments are included throughout in order to build up the content for the essays and synoptic questions.
