In order to assess reading and comprehension skills we need to check their understanding. These activities are brilliant for doing just that. The activities encourage children read the story / instructions and then find the sentences/pictures to stick in the correct places to show the answers. This is a gorgeous collection of resources to support teaching of traditional stories with a twist. This story is inspired by ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, but it has been changed to show children that certain parts of stories can be changed, to create their own versions. This activity includes differentiated comprehension activities aimed at Year 1 and Year 2 and SEN. There is also a sequencing activity included. This is a lovely activity for children with Special Educational Needs working below the national curriculum. There are illustrations and photographs of animals. The children can listen to the sounds of the animals which an adult can play on the computer or make the sounds themselves, the children can then point to the animal that would make that particular sound. Can also be used to encourage children to name the animals, or point to animals when prompted by name.

This is a great tried and tested activity to support learners with SEN who struggle with phonics. Seeing the letter shapes and having a visual of the picture and the whole word can often lead to great results. Laminate the word boards and the letters and allow learners to select the correct letters to match the word. A great first step in reading and writing for children working at P levels.

The English language can be tricky with the many different words which sound the same.
