Musical 4 Corners is a great, interactive PowerPoint game for reinforcing instrument families (brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion, and keyboards) and instrument timbre. This was my students’ favorite game and they hardly realize that they are learning while playing. Answers are included in the presentation notes so it can be played with a sub. There are 36 instruments used in this activity. Check out the thumbnails to see them all. There are also LOTS of slides so the game can be played for 5 minutes or 20. NOW WITH AUDIO! SOUND FILES OF THE INSTRUMENTS ARE NOW EMBEDDED! I’ve gotten several requests for sound, so now there are 2 versions of this game included in the download. One without sound (students have to identify the family each instrument belongs to), and one where students hear a clip and guess which instrument it is. A favorite indoor recess game at my school is “4 Corners.” Students sneak to a corner by the count of 10 and another player with their eyes closed calls out a corner number and the players standing in that corner are out. I’ve modified the game so that each corner is an instrument. Instead of having an “it” person, you can just play the embedded audio timer clip. The next slide will show an instrument in every corner. The students standing in the corner that matches the instrument family labeled in the center of the slide are out. This is a great way for students to practice identifying instruments and categorizing them to their families!

Do you have an instrumental music student who only practices the C major or Bb scale at home? In order to motivate your students to practice ALL of their assigned scales, I've created these EDITABLE scale spinners! The best part is that the probability of landing on the C Major scale is almost nil. The harder the scale, the bigger the piece of the pie. Even reluctant students can't resist spinning the scale to reveal their fate. The scales are also editable, so you can customize the spinners by changing the scales. You could also add a "student choice" or "teacher choice" slice. All you need is a pencil and a paper clip. For students who are preparing for auditions, I'll have them spin the wheel multiple times and test more scales. You can play this PDF version on your iPad, phone, or tablet by using a lead pencil, without any lead exposed (or any other slim implement). Spinners included: (All spinners include C) 2 choices of any scale being tested 1 Sharp/Flat 2 Sharps/Flats 3 Sharps/Flats 4 Sharps/Flats 6 Sharps/Flats (can be used for 5 #s/bs - because of enharmonics) 7 Sharps/Flats (The Circle of 5ths) Perfect for band, orchestra, piano, and private lessons!

I also have a set of the first 5 notes of the scale for 1st-year band in my shop.
