This takes you from the most basic simplifying up through substitution and proof of formulae.

All triangles and quarilaterals plus a regular polygon slide with 8 statements that students must decide whether they are always, sometimes or never true. This should create discussion. I have said that squares are a type of rectangle, and a rhombus is a type of parallelogram.

I needed something for my top set Year 8 to get their teeth into regarding "order of operations" and since I'm clearly into spiders at the moment this was born. It asks student to place operations and brackets into calculations to make them equal a certain total. There are 4 that get increasingly difficult (no indices involved) and then a challenge (with indices involved). There will also be more than one way to answer some, but I have provided an answer for each.

This is an exercise in finding the best way of buying what a customer wants given four different “deals” on pricing. You can buy more than required but not less which should add an extra bit of challenge. Workings are essential and I have provided answers on a separate slide each time. There are five to work out and this should lead to nice mathematical discussions. I have also put this in a format that could be used easily online if this is desirable.

This takes students through percentage of an amount, one number as a percentage of another, percentage increase and decrease (including multipliers), percentage change, repeated percentage change and the reverse. This should be more challenging as the students go through it and should produce discussion.

The aim of this is as a starter or plenary but could be used as a class activity. This activity is designed to get students thinking and discussing properties of number. The aim is to allow students to show what they do/don't know and understand. I have two versions: one where students find the number given the properties and vice versa which I suspect will create more discussion. There will be extra properties I've left out on purpose. There is a blank to make up your own too.

This can be used either as a numeracy resource in registration or in maths classes. It's various maths questions linked to a number wall (it's an advent calendar for crying out loud!). It covers lots of different topics in number, algebra, shape & space and data and gets progressively more difficult as you go on. The date should now update automatically! Typos corrected too.

This is designed to get students thinking rather than just blindly following a mathematical recipe. There a four sets of 4 problems which all have the same answer (given in the centre of the screen). Each question has a blank for the students to fill in and sometimes there is more than one answer for the blank. This particular one covers probability, percentages, fractions, ratio, angles, equations, equations of lines and other topics. I will be using these as starters to get students thinking from the off and will produce more if they work!

Dealing with inequalities from representing on a number line to solving to shading regions.

A comment from my trainee teacher made me think that rounding to decimal places and significant figures needed an activity, so I came up with this. It should get students thinking and should open up discussion on rounding, which can be a little "dry" but essential to get to grips with. Typo corrected!

Six spiders on surface area and volume (3 of each) and a final "problems" spider. They are of increasing difficulty, moving from cubes and cuboids to prisms to cones, spheres and pyramids. These are designed to avoid students getting into a rut of performing a mathematical recipe by asking a mixture of finding surface area/volume to working backwards. These usually encourage discussion in class.

This is a presentation involving six real recipes (linked on each slide) and their ingredients which students have to work with to make the number of each required. This is designed to create a bit of discussion and the questions get more challenging as you work through them.

A PowerPoint with three graphs drawn on each of 8 slides of increasing challenge, moving from linear through to quadratics, cubics, reciprocals and exponential graphs. On each slide there are equations to match to each graph plus extra equations so that it adds more challenge; there is a blank grid so that the equations that don’t match can be sketched.

Three "spiders" containing increasingly difficult questions moving from just reading the graph through calculating distance travelled to calculating acceleration.

There are a number aimed at covering parts of the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate but also ones covering topics on the GCSE curriculum too. This is a version of the codebreaker with a fish/aquatic joke. Each of the 40+ comes with answers and provides students with a fun challenge that’s slightly different to working through exercises.
