Topic 3: Infection and response
Introducing the ultimate GCSE Biology revision notes, meticulously crafted to help pupils ace their exams.
Drawing on my experience as a teacher and extensive analysis of past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports, I’ve created ‘model answer’ notes that cover every point on the AQA specification.
These notes are presented in an easy-to-use Q&A format, with colour coding, diagrams and a simple layout that makes learning easy.
After each sub-topic, you’ll find common misconceptions and why they’re wrong, as well as example application questions and model answers.
Also included are required practicals, condensed into exactly what pupils need to know to pick up marks in the exam.
Having refined these over the last 3 years alongside working as a teacher, I’ve seen first-hand the results they can achieve. I’m confident that they will be an invaluable tool to you.
Included are separate versions for combined science (trilogy) and triple science.

Even students who can recite the specification backwards tend to drop lots of marks on exam questions relating to practical activities, since they find that the style of question isn’t ‘revisable’.
However, overall, at least 15% of the marks for an A-level Biology qualification will require the assessment of practical skills (AQA A Level Biology Specification 7401/7402).
So, using this workbook to get to grips with this difficult style of question can considerably improve a students grade, and typically be the difference between getting an A* instead of an A, or an A instead of a B.
This required practical exam questions workbook was made by and first tested by a student who got an A* in 2017.
It contains 71 pages of exam questions and mark schemes.
These are arranged into 6 sections, covering each of the 6 required practicals for A Level Biology (AQA), year 2 (A2).
As well as AQA of course, exam questions have been collated from exam boards including OCR, Edexcel and WJEC, where there are some overlapping practicals.
Therefore, this workbook would also be useful for other exam boards.
Required practical 7: Use of chromatography to investigate the pigments isolated from leaves of different plants, eg leaves from shade-tolerant and shade- intolerant plants or leaves of different colours
Required practical 8: Investigation into the effect of a named factor on the rate of dehydrogenase activity in extracts of chloroplasts
Required practical 9: Investigation into the effect of a named variable on the rate of respiration of cultures of single-celled organisms
Required practical 10: Investigation into the effect of an environmental variable on the movement of an animal using either a choice chamber or a maze
Required practical 11: Production of a dilution series of a glucose solution and use of colorimetric techniques to produce a calibration curve with which to identify the concentration of glucose in an unknown
There are also 6 required practicals for AS / year 1 A Level Biology, which are covered in a separate workbook: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-spec-required-practical-exam-questions-workbook-as-biology-a-level-year-1-11585623
