Epicureanism - Philosophy of Pleasure (PowerPoint w/ Readings)

(0)
This 27-slide presentation has been carefully crafted with the teacher and student in mind. On a few slides, there is a one-sentence note that will help teachers know what point needs to be made. Also, slides have been designed to be aesthetically rich, informative, but still streamlined. I never want the teacher or student to feel overwhelmed with text. That being said, one of the strengths of this presentation is that quotes are taken from two online sources that both students and teachers can access: Principle Doctrines by Epicurus Letter to Menoeceus Essentially, Epicureanism is one of the two main schools of thought (philosophy) during the Hellenistic period of Ancient Greece. The other is Stoicism. Epicureanism is a philosophy of life that is hedonistic, yet this focus on pleasure is not what most people in our contemporary society would imagine. Epicurus’s treatment of pleasure is much richer and nuanced than what many would think.

Peter Singer - Famine, Affluence, and Morality (PowerPoint)

(0)
This 19-slide presentation was used for a lecture in Ethics and the Good Life in a University classroom. It covers the nuts and bolts of Singer’s theory that people in the West should be doing MUCH more to alleviate world hunger (save lives). It is vital that his moral position on this matter be presented in connection with his more general affiliation with Act Utilitarianism, so this is addressed in detail in this lecture. For this reason, it is a great presentation for not only discussing Singer’s moral view, but also to introduce or refresh students on Utilitarianism, one of the major normative theories in Western Philosophical Ethics. This is also an interesting way to introduce students to the term and concept of supererogation, a term that has moved to the forefront of moral philosophy since J.O. Urmson’s landmark article in 1958 titled, “Saints and Heroes.”

In addition, blanks are included throughout the PowerPoint to assure that students must stay tuned into the lecture. Answers are provided in the note section for each slide. This PowerPoint will also be easy to modify so that you can add, subtract, or manipulate information.
