About St Mary's School
St Mary’s School is an all-girls, all-through independent day school with sixth form, situated in Colchester, Essex. The school has a Christian ethos. There are approximately 381 pupils at the school between the ages of 3-16. Boys between the ages of 3-4 attend the Early Years School.
St Mary’s School was founded in 1908 and has been based at its current site in Colchester since 1923. The lower school moved in 1983 to a new site. It is a member of the Girl’s School Association and the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.

St Mary’s School want to ensure that all pupils receive a tailored education to enable them to thrive throughout their school life. It aims to provide a happy and welcoming atmosphere where learning is made enjoyable and talents are nurtured. Girls are encouraged to voice their opinions and develop a ‘have a go’ attitude. Citizenship is important to the school and pupils are taught to become active members of the community. St Mary’s School has received a number of awards for its commitment to the environment, including four Green Flag Awards. A wide range of extra-curricular clubs are offered to students across the year groups to allow them to develop their skills and interests. The school also has animals on site, to encourage students to nurture and respect others.

“Pupils benefit from a detailed careers programme throughout the Senior School which covers post-16 choices, as well as future careers. Former pupils regularly return to talk about their career plans. Pupils are involved in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Network events and Women in Construction events in the region.”
