About Terra Nova School
Terra Nova is a leading Prep School for children age 3 to 13 years old. It is a Charitable Trust with its own Board of Governors. It is predominantly a day school, but offers an extended day in which children can stay for supervised Prep, tea, evening activities and overnight. There is, therefore, a thriving boarding community throughout the week.
The School was founded in l897 and for many years occupied its own purpose-built accommodation near the Royal Birkdale Golf Course in Lancashire. On the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 the property was requisitioned and the School moved to Jodrell Hall in Cheshire where it has remained ever since.
The main house, built in the l8th century and enlarged in the l9th, with periodic additions in the 20th, combines elegance, functionality and homeliness. The School has an excellent range of facilities, which include: a large Performing Arts Centre (which is used for Assemblies, Productions, Concerts, Exhibitions and PE), a Dining Room, Recreational Rooms and Dormitories, two dedicated Science Laboratories, a Library, an Art Room, a Design Technology Department, Music Rooms, an outdoor covered Swimming Pool, a Shooting Range and a separate purpose-built department for Pre- Prep department pupils. The School is surrounded by 35 acres of grounds that include 3 tennis / netball courts, pitches for football, hockey, rounders, rugby and a 200 metre running track, a mountain bike course, lawns, woods and a brook. They are extensively used for a wide variety of sports and activities.
As a result of many years of sensible and visionary development the School now boasts some very high quality accommodation. This includes an Information Technology Room (2001) and a Computerised Language Laboratory (2007). We have just re-equipped our ICT Room with a new PC Network and have recently purchased interactive whiteboards for classroom teaching. In 2009 we opened a new Learning Resource Centre.
The School is co-educational and currently has approximately 280 pupils. Children are prepared for a wide range of Senior Schools, both locally and nationally, including: Repton, Sedbergh, Rugby, Uppingham, Shrewsbury, Stockport Grammar, King’s Macclesfield, Winchester College, Manchester Grammar School and Cheadle Hulme Grammar. The School is very proud of an outstanding scholarship record over recent years, which has included prestigious Academic, Art, DT, Sport, All-Rounder and Leadership Awards.
A significant number of staff live in houses on the estate, which borders the main A535. The nearest village is Twemlow (2 kilometres) although Holmes Chapel (5 kilometres) and Goostrey (4 kilometres) offer more facilities. Personal mobility is essential as there is no public transport available.
Governance and Management
The School is a Charitable Trust run by a Board of Governors. Mr Philip Stewart, the Headmaster, was appointed in September 2017 and is supported by Mr Rob Searle (Deputy Headmaster), Mrs Hayley Jordan (Bursar), and Mrs Jess Olllier (Head of Year 1-4) and Mrs Carol Roach, (Head of Nursery, Pre-Prep and Reception. The School also has a Head of Marketing & Admissions, a Director of Music and a Head of PE and Games. Each department is managed by a Head of Department, who is responsible to the Director of Studies for the running of their department.
Safer Recruitment Policy

There are circumstances when a new Employee may start working at the School before their CRB Check has come through, provided all other vetting checks are carried out, including checks with List 99 or the Independent Safeguarding Authority. The Headmaster will undertake a Risk Assessment of the situation and set the levels of supervision require until the CRB is received. New employees may NOT work in the boarding provision before the CRB has been received. Details of each appointment are put into the School’s Central Register of Appointments, which is kept by the Bursar.
