Job overview

With a new CEO and Executive Leadership Team, the Pontefract Academies Trust is on an exciting journey of improvement.

DIRECTOR OF SCIENCE

LOCATION:  PONTEFRACT, WEST YORKSHIRE

SALARY:  Up to £60,755 (L14-L18)

CONTRACT:  Permanent | Full Time

START DATE:  January 2019 preferred, but negotiable with the successful candidate

We are looking for a high-achieving, inspiring, and creative leader to help us create a centre of excellence for Science across our Trust and our two secondary schools.

We want someone who is thoroughly passionate about Science and the development of Science pedagogy and curriculum. We need someone with a strong presence; someone who is ambitious for the students, their colleagues and the schools; who has vision; and who is interested in achieving the very best outcomes both in attainment and progress for our young people.

For the right person this could be the career opportunity of a lifetime. You will be working closely with a new and nationally recognised Executive Leadership Team, (and a newly-appointed Director of Maths), you will operate across both our schools, and you will report directly to the Executive Director of Secondary Education for the Trust, James Franklin-Smith. James and his whole team are dedicated to removing barriers to success – for our students and our staff. There is huge potential for substantial professional development for the successful candidate, in terms of future career trajectory within our Trust.

This post would be ideal for anyone with a successful and proven track record, with ambition and drive, a clear vision of what constitutes excellence in a Science department, and some leadership experience (perhaps as a Head of Department, lead or second in Science, or leading on curriculum, T&L or assessment) and who sees a wider leadership position as the next step in their career. You will use these skills to embed those improvements the Trust has already initiated within the Science departments and ensure that both our secondary schools now achieve the consistent and sustained forward momentum in Science that our students deserve.

We offer:

• Full support from a dedicated, inspirational and approachable leadership team

• A collegiate approach to best practice, with a dynamic yet inclusive style

• Real career development, advice and a platform towards further career success

For a full pack including application forms please visit www.directorofscience.co.uk or e-mail our advisers ASDTi on gm@asdti.com or telephone ASDTi on 07736 775776 – they are available evenings and weekends as well as during the working day, to help you make the right choice.

Closing date for applications: Friday 12th October 2018 at 9am

Interviews will be the following week: w/c 15th October

This post is subject to an enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.

The Pontefract Academies Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Pontefract Academies Trust is a cross phase Multi Academy Trust comprising of nine schools: seven primaries and two 11-16 secondary schools. We are a medium sized family of schools all located within Pontefract. We educate over 3500 children and young people across the town.

The Trust has undertaken a change management programme with a focus upon accelerating the performance of all our schools. The progress to date has been strong but there is more to come. Our collective work has seen one of our secondary schools shift from special measures to being rated good for the first time since 2009. In addition, in 2019 our six primary schools delivered their best SATs outcomes at Key Stage 2 in their history. Consequently, the Trust is in a strong position on which to build. We are honest about our progress as a Multi Academy Trust and whilst we have made great strides recently, we are humble enough to admit that we may not be where we want to be currently and there are things we can do better.

We believe that we have a strong, yet simple mission and vision as a Trust.  We have a set of guiding principles that steer our daily work. It is not over ambitious to say that we aim to create something transformational in our schools in Pontefract. We want to be joined by people that share a passion for improving social mobility and who want to make a difference day in and day out. Our children and young people need the skills and qualifications to operate in an increasingly competitive global workplace. To this end, as educationalists, our role in improving the life chances of the children and young people in our communities should never be underestimated.

The ambition of the Trust is shared by our group of talented and highly dedicated support staff, teachers, leaders and SPRB members at our schools. We are equally grateful to our pupils and parents for their support and commitment.
