Job overview

Head of Junior School

We are a large and successful Junior School looking for an outstanding, hard-working and energetic individual to share in our ambitious vision for the future. This senior role requires experience and dynamism, teamwork and dedication and an enthusiasm for leadership in the independent sector.

Royal Russell is a happy, vibrant and financially sound School where many pupils complete their education with us from Nursery through to Sixth Form. We are looking for someone who wishes to challenge themselves and colleagues to deliver an outstanding holistic educational experience for our young people.

You will be a strong and decisive leader, able to positively engage with Governors and parents, inspire pupils and staff and motivate all to give of their best. You will join an established School Leadership Team who will assist you to achieve your vision, and be supported by a fantastic team of highly effective and motivated teachers and support staff.

This is an excellent career opportunity for someone wishing to step up from a Deputy Head role, or alternatively for someone who wishes to develop their leadership skills in a larger school environment. The new Head will also take in lead in the design and creation of a new building to house all of the Junior School learning and teaching space which is planned for the near future.

We offer excellent working conditions in a beautiful setting in the Shirley Hills, alongside a supportive team and wonderful children keen to learn and grow. If this sounds like the role you have been looking for please get in touch with us. Both, James Thompson our out-going Junior School Head, and our Headmaster, Chris Hutchinson would be delighted to discuss the role with you.

About Royal Russell School

Thank you for your interest in joining the Royal Russell team

Royal Russell is an Independent Day and Boarding School for boys and girls aged 3 to 18.

Royal Russell is different by design and offers an exceptional education as a family school by valuing what makes each pupil distinctively brilliant. Pupils are supported to realise their vision of success in an open community that reflects the real world and celebrates all achievements.

Located just 8 mins from East Croydon station, pupils enjoy the 110-acre campus, which contains incredible facilities to inspire learning and personal growth; from cutting-edge science labs, extensive sporting facilities, Chapel, Great Hall, spacious dining areas, Performing Arts Centre and beautiful Houses surrounded by green open space.

The School offers bespoke educational pathways to support children and is guided by expert tutors, teachers, coaches and pastoral teams.

There are more than 300 pupils in the Junior School, and over 800 pupils in the Senior School including approximately 250 pupils in the Sixth Form. The School also has around 180 boarders staying in the boarding houses on campus.  Pupils benefit from learning in a co-educational setting and as part of an open community that reflects the real world, celebrating both individual and collective achievements.

Royal Russell was founded in 1853 as a charity to look after orphans of families from the textile trades and is proud to have enjoyed Royal Patronage from its foundation, and for having Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as the School’s Patron during her reign.
