Reports to:  Deputy Principal Pastoral

The Head of Year for is responsible to the and further accountable to the Secondary Deputy Principal. The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those covered in the teacher job description and the employment contract. It may be modified by the Deputy Principal Pastoral and Secondary Principal, by upon mutual agreement, to reflect or anticipate changes in the job, commensurate with the salary and job title.

A Head of Year will carry out the following essential duties and responsibilities:

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain a presence in the year group are and promote a positive climate for learning
  • Positively promote the vision, mission, core values and aims of Deira International School
  • Share any year group organisation plans in consultation with the Deputy Principal
  • Liaise with the Well Being Advisor as required
  • Participate in student shadowing as required
  • Promote a positive ethos amongst the teaching staff and students in the year group
  • Ensure effective communication within the year group
  • Organise and run HOY/Tutor meetings and keep an accurate record of the minutes
  • Encourage high standards and expectations of the students’ work and behaviour and maintenance of positive and productive relationships
  • Ensure school uniform rules are adhered to
  • Effectively communicate with other Heads of Year, Heads of Departments and members of the Secondary Leadership Team, where appropriate
  • Be a positive role model to students and staff in the year group and in standards of presentation, personal and professional conduct
  • Liaise with other HoYs and school Leadership for the effective continuity, progression and transition of students between year groups and sections of the school
    Liaise with the Careers and Guidance team to promote careers education
  • Ensure assessment and reporting is consistent with school policy
  • Take overall responsibility for monitoring the academic progress of students in the year group and direct the work of the tutors in the year group in regards to monitoring academic progress
  • Commit to personal, professional learning, congruent with DIS appraisal system and the school’s Strategic Plan

PASTORAL CURRICULUM

  • Take responsibility for the Moral Education programme; the Scheme of Work; lessons and its implementation with tutors
  • Monitor the work of the Tutors and the delivery of the pastoral programme
  • Lead and/or co-ordinate year group and assemblies as required

SUPPORTING STUDENT LEARNIG AND PROGRESS

  • Assist with the organisation and day to day of Progress Mentors to ensure they are fulfilling their role effectively in support of all students
  • Liaise closely with the Head of Learning and promote the learning skills of students in Moral Education

PARENTS AND STUDENTS

  • Take responsibility for the coordination of pastoral care of students’ in the year group
  • Ensure parents are well informed about all aspects of the year group, in particular, the expected academic, social and physical changes, where appropriate, that will occur as students travel throughout the year

ADMINISTRATION AND RESOURCES

  • Be responsible for the necessary administrative and organisational tasks relating to the year group
  • Monitor the quality of the classroom environment and communal areas of the year group
  • Hold meetings with staff as necessary to ensure that information is communicated clearly and promptly and that administrative procedures are supported
