Job overview
HEAD OF YEAR (TLR 1b £9,474)
Required for September 2018 a suitably qualified and experienced teacher to become a Head of Year.
Following the semi-retirement of the current post-holder, we are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated professional to this crucial role in the school. S/he will be responsible for a year group of approximately 280 pupils and for the leadership and management of a team of 10 tutors. Year Heads remain with their year group through Years 7-11 and the person appointed will initially have responsibility for Year 7.
The high standards of care, guidance and academic monitoring of pupils achieved by the pastoral team underpin Sheldon’s status as a high performing school. The successful candidate will be expected to build on these firm foundations and develop the role still further.
Sheldon is a high-performing school with a strong record of success and we have an outstanding local and national reputation. It is a very happy school and staff morale is high. Our vision is to be a forward-thinking and outward-looking school, where aspirations are high and ambitions unlimited. A confident community where teaching is inspirational, every individual valued and students are resilient, successful and proud of their school.
“The all-pervading caring ethos ensures that pupils are happy and able to thrive from the moment they arrive at school. The vibrant atmosphere created reflects the commitment to pupils’ enriching and positive school experiences.” Ofsted June 2017.
We are situated in attractive parkland on the edge of the rapidly growing market town of Chippenham, surrounded by beautiful countryside. There are good rail and road links to London, we are 5 minutes from junction 17 on the M4 and a 10 minute train journey to the beautiful Roman City of Bath.

It prides itself on being a place where unique individuals achieve their own aims. The school motto is "unity and loyalty", and Sheldon encourages all students to engage with different cultures and systems of belief.
There is particular progress for students in English and physical education, as well as creative subjects such as design and technology and art. A specialist school in science, sport and languages, Sheldon has multiple facilities for those subjects; the modern languages department, for example, has a frequently updated mobile library. The school newsletter, The Sheldon Standard, gives students the chance to submit articles – one of many opportunities available across the secondary school and sixth form.
