Job overview

Queen Margaret’s is a boarding school where girls aim high and exceed expectations, where they make friendships that last a lifetime and where they learn to respect individuality and difference.

Established in 1901, the School has a roll of around 270 girls aged between 11 and 18, of which 70% are Full Boarders and 30% Day Boarders. It is set in the most stunning, rural location, just a few minutes south of the City of York.

Over the last 30 years or so, the School has benefitted from a programme of significant capital investment resulting in major expansion and impressive new facilities whilst simultaneously cementing its reputation for academic excellence. The culture of the School is constantly to strive for excellence in all fields, including pastorally. It is a school where the girls feel loved and valued and where every talent and potential for talent is cherished and celebrated.

Each year about 50 girls leave to go to top rank universities, but it’s their personal attributes – from self-confidence to soft skills such as communication and teamwork – that launch them into interesting careers. Every independent school says as much, but at QM one only has to meet the girls to see the living proof

The current strategic goals for the School are to:

· Deliver a motivating girl-focused education both inside and outside the classroom

· Provide a first class boarding experience underpinned by compassionate and perceptive pastoral care

· Attract, develop and retain inspirational staff throughout the School

· Ensure the continued development of strong and effective communication throughout the QM Family

· Establish and embed a culture of philanthropy within the School community to enhance facilities and infrastructure, and further support the provision of bursaries

· Maintain and develop the facilities and fabric of the School.

The Governors of Queen Margaret’s now seek to appoint a new Head who will have energy, warmth, integrity and vision, who will act as a role model for pupils and staff and a source of inspiration for prospective parents and donors.

The successful candidate will need to believe in the values of all-girls’ boarding education and be imaginative in how this is promoted to maintain relevance for the 21st Century. She (or he) will want to play an active role in the day-to-day life of the School as well as be an active and effective ambassador outside the Escrick Park estate, building on the excellent work by Jessica Miles, who leaves in Easter 2019 for the South West of the UK, to  take up the Headship of Monmouth School for Girls.

Closing date for applications: 10.00 on Wednesday 3 October 2018

Queen Margaret’s is an independent school for independent girls. We are a school that encourages every girl to confidently pursue her interests; girls at QM are recognised for their willingness to try everything that life has to offer them.

Set in a stunning rural setting of 70 acres of parkland, Queen Margaret's enjoys close ties to York which is only six miles away as well as London, less than a two-hour train ride away. As the only all-girls full boarding school in the North of England, 75% of girls are full boarders while day boarders have beds at School and are encouraged to stay over for School events. The full boarding nature encourages busy weekends with a myriad of opportunities to look forward to at the end of each week. Queen Margaret’s provides an immense variety of activities, clubs and societies and other enrichment opportunities while never sacrificing the needs of the individual girl. As one parent noted, ‘Queen Margaret’s benefits from being run as if it were a large school but has all the benefits and familiarities you expect of a small school.’ The School was recently named as  the top girls boarding and day school in Yorkshire by The Sunday Times and has also been awarded ‘Best School Food in the UK’ at the Tatler Awards, which reflects its holistic view of education where a reputation for academic excellence sits alongside exceptional pastoral care.

Academic Excellence

QM girls achieve excellence inside and outside the classroom and are interesting, well-informed and confident members of the community. The School offers a full range of subjects at (i)GCSE and A Level, and examination results are consistently excellent. In 2016 our girls achieved a 100% pass rate at A Level. The recent results report that 50% of entries gained the highly sought after A*-A grades and nearly 80% of entries gained A*-B grades. 30% of all girls taking A Level examinations in 2016 achieved three or more A*-A grades. GCSE results in 2016 were similarly impressive, with 98% of students achieving five or more A*-C grades, far outstripping the falling national average of 67%. 87% of all QM GCSE entries in 2016 gained A*-B grades, up from 81% in 2015.

A Thriving Boarding Community

QM is a community of people who care for each other and grow as individuals. Boarding is arranged by year group, with each under the care of well-qualified staff. Accommodation meets the needs of each age group: Year I girls live in a large, comfortable family house with its own garden and playground, while Upper Sixth girls live independently in picturesque cottages in the School grounds.

Sport

As well as representing QM, many girls are selected for regional and national sports teams. Exceptional facilities include an AstroTurf, sports hall, competition swimming pool, all-weather tennis courts, squash courts, a nine-hole golf course and a riding school adjacent to the main School campus. QM is home to some of the country’s top riders and has supported girls to become U18 National Champions. Main activities are lacrosse, hockey, tennis, netball, riding, rounders, swimming and athletics.

Creative and Performing Arts

The creative arts play a central role in life at QM. The purpose-built theatre and dance studio and modern art and technology facilities provide the ideal setting for every girl to discover and develop her talents.
