Job overview

Headteacher, Fulford School and CEO designate, South York MAT
£ competitive

Recently named State Secondary School of the Year for the North of England, Fulford School’s sustained success speaks for itself. Our consistent high achievement is a product of motivated, curious pupils; engaged and supportive parents; and an exceptional staff team. It’s a great and rewarding place to teach, learn, and lead.

As the founding school of the South York MAT (SYMAT), Fulford also plays a key role in York’s educational ecosystem. Longstanding, mutual partnerships with the schools in our MAT have enabled us to build a truly ambitious multi-academy structure. Moreover, all our schools (as well as those intending to join) have been rated either Good or better by Ofsted. So, the foundations couldn’t be sounder.

This makes the role of Headteacher and CEO designate all the more attractive. There are few better opportunities to join an organisation that’s already performing extremely strongly, but which also has the self-awareness to know where it can improve, and the hunger to make it happen.

We’ve created this role specifically to enable the successful candidate to establish a really solid position within Fulford School and with partners across the SYMAT before you assume the additional duties of CEO. It’s tailor-made for an experienced individual with substantial experience as a Headteacher, Associate Headteacher or well-established Deputy Headteacher with whole-school responsibility and a strong track record.

An outstanding classroom practitioner, able to model and lead improvement in teaching and learning, we would also look for significant strengths in curriculum and school improvement, including performance management. A clear and positive educational philosophy, demonstrable success as a teacher and school leader, and the capacity to take on the complexities of working at system level will all be essential.

Visit www.leadfulford.co.uk or contact Jo Fish or David Gooda at Navigate NDC on 0113 493 1975 for a confidential discussion.

Closing date: 28 January 2019.

‘Realising potential, creating the future’

Our mission statement, designed by our students, highlights our commitment to maximising achievement and to develop our students as individuals. We believe that there is no limit to learning or ceiling on achievement and we seek the best progress and outcomes for all of our students. Our view of education is one that, while focusing on results, goes beyond qualifications through developing strong moral values, excellent social skills and a sense of community in our students so that they develop into articulate, responsible and successful adults.

Ofsted Inspection

Following our recent Ofsted inspection on 4th and 5th of October 2023 we are delighted that the school has been graded outstanding in all areas.

A school is a complex social structure and whilst any inspection is a snap shot in a moment in time it is particularly pleasing that inspectors were able to clearly identify the positive culture and moral purpose of our school.

Our core HEART values are fundamental to all we do at Fulford. Over the years we have been determined to ensure our pupils benefit from an aspirational, academic curriculum and at the same time provide a fully inclusive learning environment where all are treated as individuals and supported to be the best versions of themselves.

Fulford School

Fulford School is situated in the southern outskirts of the city and draws most of its students from the villages to the south and east of York, as well as the York suburbs of Fulford, Fishergate and Heslington. Our school is an oversubscribed 11-18 mixed comprehensive with a Year 7 admission number of 300. The current number on roll is 1700 students including nearly 300 in the Sixth Form with school numbers being projected to grow in subsequent years. The school’s growth and success can be seen in a number of ways.

There has been an extensive building programme in recent years with a 2-storey new classroom block being completed and fully open to learners in 2023.The school has achieved a variety of Awards including the International Schools Award, the Healthy Schools Award, Advanced Inclusion Award, World Class School Status and the Sunday Times Comprehensive School of the Decade.

The school has an Enhanced Resource Centre with a capacity of 10 places for students on the autistic spectrum. We are committed to inclusion and maximising the talents of all in our care, believing all in our community should be known and valued as individuals.

We run a horizontal year system led by five Heads of Year supported by Assistant Heads of Year whose purpose is to support our learners in their journey from Year 7 through to Year 11. This system enables us to offer excellent support and guidance to all our students and it provides great opportunities for our students to undertake a range of leadership roles. A dedicated wider pastoral team supports this journey including a School Nurse, School Social Worker and a School Counsellor & Wellbeing Worker.

Our historic and current results are consistently high both for progress and attainment.

Fulford is an outward looking school that prioritises partnership working. This is seen in the development of closer ties and increased collaborative working with our primary partners and our current work to broaden the scale of South York MAT.

You will be joining a supportive, friendly and committed staff body of over 200 colleagues supported by excellent leadership at all levels.
