Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a dedicated, enthusiastic and dynamic teacher to lead our highly successful Languages Department. The successful candidate will be a strong linguist in their own right, able to teach and enthuse adaptably across the school with high expectations. The current postholder is retiring after over twelve highly successful years, during which the strong tradition of languages at St Hilda’s has been promoted and maintained.

The role is to teach French to all classes from Nursery to Year 6, together with sharing some form teacher responsibilities.

We are looking for a good all-rounder with commitment and dedication to delivering an exciting teaching and learning experience, and who has an insight as to how individual children can reach their maximum potential in learning a language.  Our youngest children really enjoy the immersive nature of language lessons which include a fun and interactive approach at all times. Our small class sizes ensure that we can give our pupils the best education and be rewarded with children who are excited by learning.

A major event during the year is the week-long French trip to Normandy, which has been run for over 40 years. The Year 6 class enjoy an immersive experience undertaking a variety of activities. The trip is organised and led by the Language Teacher.

St Hilda’s School was founded in 1891 and has been on the current site for over a hundred years.  It is an integral part of the Harpenden community and is widely respected for its high standards and nurturing atmosphere.  Recent developments have included the integration of outdoor learning into the curriculum as well as a strong focus on wellbeing.  The building was substantially extended in 2013 which has seen the addition of 6 new classrooms and an Art Room, together with existing classrooms being enhanced and adapted, including a new STEM Lab, and a Performing Arts Studio created in 2016.  The School was most recently inspected by ISI in October 2019 and was deemed excellent in all areas.  The pandemic has not diminished the School’s ability to adapt and thrive in different circumstances, during which it has gone from strength to strength.

St Hilda’s has approximately 170 girls aged 2 1/2 – 11 years, also admitting boys to the Nursery.  From St Hilda’s, girls move on to the major independent schools in the area, including Haberdashers, St Albans High School, Berkhamsted and Abbot’s Hill.  Some girls move on to board at Queenswood, Haileybury or sometimes further afield, and also to some of the very successful local state sector schools.  In the last three years alone, the girls at St Hilda’s have amassed 48 scholarships and each year, and almost all girls have been awarded their first choice of school.

Harpenden is a thriving residential town between Luton and St. Albans, with close proximity to the A1(M), M1 and M25 and easy access to national rail networks, including a 30 minute service to London.
