Job overview

If you have a passion for your subject and want to share it with others, then join our successful and well established College as an evening Language Tutor.

We are interested in hearing from tutors who can inspire our adult learners in an informative and engaging way. Our evening language workshops are aimed principally at developing conversational skills for general and holiday purposes.

We have an immediate need for a Spanish Tutor, but we are looking to broaden out our provision of language workshops so we are keen to hear from tutors of other foreign languages.

Our offer from mid-October for Spanish includes 3 levels from beginners to advanced, with 2 hour workshops running on two or three evenings per week.

The successful applicants will join a team of Language tutors who each contribute to the planning of the workshops and the sharing of resources/ideas. All staff are committed to the success of learners and are receptive to new ideas and approaches. In return, learners are very appreciative of the high level of support they receive.

We are seeking to expand the range of educational and recreational services and facilities we provide for the wider community and so there may be opportunities for additional work as this new Community Hub project expands.

Experience of language tutoring is desirable but not essential, provided you have strong expertise in your subject area and a commitment to providing excellent and interesting language workshops.

Subject to enrolments, there is initially a 9 week contract on offer for a Spanish tutor, for 2 hours per workshop. The workshops will run during the evening 6pm to 8pm from mid-October to mid-December, starting week commencing 15 October, with an enrolment evening 8 October. Future contracts will be available in subsequent terms, dependent on courses to be offered and enrolments.

In addition to the timetabled teaching hours, Language Tutors are expected to work such additional hours as may be needed to prepare effectively for the workshops. Additional paid hours will be agreed for the development of new workshops, the attendance at meetings and at open days.

It is essential that applicants are available for the full term of the workshops and time off will not be approved unless in exceptional circumstances. The hourly rate includes a payment for pro-rata entitlement to annual leave and public holidays.

College Overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College is an open-access College, which provides general education primarily for 16-19 year olds in the area. The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider.

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
