Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a bright, tenacious and ambitious individual to join our strong STEM Team from January 2019.  The successful candidate will be an excellent teacher of Science with a Chemistry specialism and have a strong desire to assist other teachers in the classroom.

This post is significant, supporting and developing teaching in Science and elsewhere within the Academy.  It is a perfect step for someone looking for promotion but wishing to take a different route than Head of Department.  The responsibility and remuneration are at Head of Department levels and the next step from this post is Assistant Principal.  The remuneration reflects the level of responsibility.  We seek to appoint an ambitious person who wishes to be a Vice Principal within 3-5 years.

Our oversubscribed 11-18 Academy of 1480 students is transformational for the young people of our community and was judged 'Good' in all areas in February 2016.  We have a thriving academic sixth form which achieved ALPS 3 in the summer of 2016 and ALPS 5 more recently. The sixth form is housed in a new multi-million pound mezzanine suite of rooms.

The Academy is part of the large United Learning group of schools which brings significant advantages to staff at a senior level seeking promotion and eventual headship.  Opportunities exist within the United Learning Group to network and work with other Academies.  There is a culture of collaboration and talent-spotting; good leaders often find themselves progressing to headship without leaving the group.

The successful candidate will fully embrace our values of Respect, Determination, Ambition, Tolerance and Integrity and will have a working knowledge of how these will apply within a Secondary Academy context and within the role itself.

Wherever your location, this is an ideal post as we shall offer the successful candidate a comprehensive induction and support package together with a well-developed and highly personalised CPD programme. You may also be eligible for a relocation assistance.

If this position sounds attractive, feel free to call Elaine Kristan on 01604 210045, for an informal chat about the post and the Academy or apply directly.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted in all areas in March 2023. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, TOLERANCE and INTEGRITY. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Quality Mark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

The leadership of the academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons.  To this end, the student behaviour system is clear and simple and easy to administer in lessons. If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf. Teachers at the academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here. In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • A genuine ‘flexi-working’ approach with at least one opportunity a week to come in late or leave early for every teaching member of staff
  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally
