Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented senior leader to take on the role of Principal at Harris Primary Free School Peckham.

Harris Primary Free School Peckham opened in 2012 to meet the demand for high quality primary school places in Southwark, and now educates children from Reception to Year 6. This Summer will mark the first set of Year 6 SAT results. The area is highly disadvantaged but very aspirational. As a consequence, your work as Principal in this school, more than in many others, has the power to really transform lives.

About the role

The post would suit an ambitious leader looking either to extend their experience of Headship, or to start their first Principalship in a rewarding environment and highly supportive Federation. For first time Principals, we will provide all of the support needed in the form of individual mentoring from an experienced Harris Executive Principal. For existing Headteachers, we offer unrivalled progression opportunities to Executive Principalship, and the option to support you through  our National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership (NPQEL) programme. The course draws on the leadership expertise of Harris Executive  leaders and Directors as well as other successful MATs from across the country.

Your opportunity

At Harris, you will have the opportunity to work in a close network of academies, and with Principals from across the wider Federation. We provide a range of high quality central services: most importantly, a team of very skilled class based Teaching & Learning consultants, all committed to assisting you in improving your school.

Harris Benefits

As part of the Harris Federation, we can offer you a range of benefits, including:

  • A network of fellow senior leaders and Principals with a wealth of knowledge and expertise
  • Support and mentoring from some of the best executive leaders in education
  • Unrivalled opportunities for leadership progression, including preparing you for your first Principalship or Executive Principalship.
  • Private Medical Cover, Relocation Allowances and Pension scheme (TPS)
  • Plus, the opportunity to work with our amazing children!

About Primary Education at Harris:

Primary education at Harris comprises 19 Primary academies, plus three all-through academies, with every inspected academy having been judged Good or Outstanding (67% Outstanding). Some of these academies are new free schools, but most were previously failing schools located in challenging areas of London. The independent Education Policy Institute regularly ranks Harris as a top performing Primary trust for pupil progress.

The Harris Federation

The Harris Federation is the leading large Multi Academy Trust in the country for primary education. We have an established reputation in transforming education in London and an unrivalled track record in achieving success through rapid school improvement.

Harris is a Federation and not a chain; each academy is different, reflecting the particular aspirations and leadership style of its Principal.

About Harris Primary Free School Peckham

School summary

Harris Primary Free School Peckham opened in 2012 to meet the demand for high quality primary school places in Southwark, and now educates children from Reception to Year 6. We have a superb team of teachers and support staff, all of whom are experts in primary education. We are an academy that values and invests in staff, excellent training, development, and planned career progression. We are a team of ordinary individuals who genuinely enjoy working together to create extraordinary outcomes.

As well as focusing on helping our pupils become confident readers, writers and mathematicians, we will also be ensuring that, as our pupils progress through the school there is a range of music, drama and sporting activities for them to choose from.

We are proud to be part of a vibrant and supportive international community and are keen that parents and families play an active part in our school life.

Our building is smart and modern, and we are fortunate enough to have a lovely playground and excellent equipment and facilities.

Academy Ethos

Our aim is to make sure that, from the first day of their education, our pupils have a truly happy experience of school. This means teaching them to become confident learners and nurturing each child’s personality and character.

Whatever a child’s background or starting point, we want to make sure that they finish Year 6 with the academic skills, social skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Every lesson at our school is creative and there is plenty of time for children to think, to play, to discover and wonder.

Each child is taught in the way that suits them best and we step in quickly if a change is needed. For some children, this might involve one-to-one support if they are finding something difficult and for others it could mean stretching them more to keep them interested.

Our school is relaxed and comfortable but pupils know that good behaviour is expected of them and are taught to respect each other and their teachers. They are frequently praised and rewarded for trying their best and for being kind, hard-working and well-behaved.

Our school is friendly and welcoming and we always make sure that every pupil has at least one friend.
