Job overview

We are looking to appoint a Science Technician to provide technical support, advice and practical assistance to our busy Science Department in order to support the effective, consistent and safe teaching of Science at Harrodian. 

Experience of working in a school environment with Chemistry is essential. The successful candidate will have COSHH and CLEAPSS training as appropriate. You will have a good knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety regulations, as well as First Aid certification. You will have a thorough understanding of chemicals and their properties. You will be practical, numerate and well organised and demonstrate the ability to pay meticulous attention to detail. You will possess good communication skills and be able to work collaboratively within the department as well as on your own initiative, working well under pressure and to tight deadlines, prioritising tasks as necessary. Training in some areas may be available for the right candidate.

We have seven well-equipped laboratories, and practical work is a key aspect of Science teaching. The successful candidate will prepare for and lay out the laboratories with the equipment and materials requisitioned for practical exercises, taking responsibility for stocktaking and ordering as required; carry out risk assessments for practical and technical activities; run trials of experiments; run demonstrations; and help and supervise students with learning activities as required. You will advise with regard to the safety, repair and general maintenance of all resources, tools, equipment and our laboratories in compliance with COSHH, CLEAPSS and other relevant legislation and school documentation.

Working hours

  • This is a 5 days per week role during term time, plus up to 13 days in the school holidays, to include staff and Inset days and one or two days at the beginning and end of each term.
  • Working hours will be 08:00 to 17:00. Part-time hours might be considered for the right candidate.

Holidays

  • You are entitled to teaching holidays, less up to 13 days per annum in the school holidays, plus Bank Holidays.
  • Annual leave must be taken during school holidays. A timetable is published annually. Any variances must be agreed with the Headteacher.

The Harrodian School is a mixed, non-denominational all-through independent day school situated in Barnes, South West London. The Harrodian School was founded by Lady Eliana and Sir Alford Houston-Boswell and opened in 1993. The school’s original intake of 65 students has expanded to over 900 students from the ages of 4-18.
