Job overview

Riverside School is a co-educational secondary special school catering for up to 140 KS3/4 students from across Haringey with a wide range of general, complex, severe, and profound and multiple learning difficulties. 66% of the students have a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder (ASD).

The school’s populations consists of 128 Main School places for students aged 11-16 from across Haringey with a wide range of general, complex, severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties - including those who have complex language and communication needs - and 12 Learning Centre places for students aged 14-19 experiencing exceptional emotional and behavioural challenges. Art forms one of the Progress 8 measured subjects across all teams.

The Main School is structured into 4 teams of classes:

Team 4 - Pre-formal Curriculum P-Steps (Programmes) P1i–P3 (3 classes)
Team 3 – Informal Curriculum P-Steps (Programmes) - P3 – P5 (4 classes)
Team 2 – Semi-Formal Curriculum P-Steps (Programmes) P5-P8 (5 classes)
Team 1 – Formal Curriculum P-Steps (Programmes) P8-P15 (4 classes)

There are discrete but closely linked parallel class groupings within each key stage for ASD students and those with general learning difficulties, (GLD). Class groupings are governed by commonalities of need, levels of independence and learning capacity, and both strands of need will include MLD, SLD and PMLD students. Our Team 4 curriculum focuses on Cognition, Communication, Self-Care and Independence and Physical Development.

Class tutors teach core and some other subjects, but there are specialist teachers with their own rooms for the delivery of art, computing, design and technology, food technology, music and PE.

The school’s achievements are recognised through a range of awards, including National Autistic Society (NAS) Certificate of Quality Autism Provision, the Artsmark Award, Sportsmark, the National Standard for Healthy Schools, the NAACE ICT Mark, the Sustainable Travel Outstanding Award, and the International School Award. In October 2016, Riverside’s effectiveness was judged by Ofsted to be Good.

Teachers appointed to Riverside are expected to develop the skills to teach students of all levels of need effectively, and be able to manage varying degrees of challenging behaviour. In-house CPD is provided according to new teacher’s professional requirements. Some knowledge/experience of engaging with young people with learning disabilities is desirable.

THE ART & DESIGN POST (CPS + SN + ILA)

All art and design practice in the school follows the principle that the creative act is the ultimate goal and this is valued and honoured however this may manifest itself e.g. a mark made by a PMLD student is as significant an achievement as a detailed portrait painting made by an MLD student.

This is an exciting time for the teaching of art and design, (and music), at Riverside. A £1m new Creative Arts Block project was opened at the school just over a year ago to enhance the teaching of both these subjects, and the school has just now been awarded the Artmark to recognize the quality of the teaching of Art & Design.

The art and design teacher will teach most of the 16 Main School classes on a weekly contact timetable. Classes will arrive for the lessons with their class assistants who will work with the class under the direction of the teacher. However, there is considerable flexibility in how the art groups are organized. For example, there will be some half-class groups and some targeted Entry Level groups.

Application packs for this post can be found on the school’s website under Vacancies.

We are a successful co-educational maintained secondary special school based in Haringey in North London. We provide 160 places for students, mainly from across the borough. The school is located on the same site as Woodside High School which enables a range of inclusive group activities to take place between the schools.

Students at Riverside experience a wide range of learning challenges, from the highest functioning to the most complex, including general, moderate, complex, severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties. Approximately two-thirds of the school’s population have a diagnosis of autism, one third a variety of other needs.

At KS4 all students take a range of fully accredited courses according to their capacity. The majority of students transition to college at year 11, but a small cohort stay on at Riverside for their Post-16 years where they also take a range of accredited courses.

The school is organised into 5 Teams. Classes are grouped within Teams 1-4 according to common levels of communication and independence, with Team 1 classes being the highest-functioning, and the other Teams reflecting staggered complexities of need. Team 5 is based in an off-site annex covering a range of needs. The age ranges are: Teams 1-3 (11-16), Team 4 (11-19) Team 5 (16-19).
