Job overview

Teacher of Chemistry/Head of Chemistry

Cokethorpe is an independent school providing education to boys and girls from the age of 3 through to 18. Situated in beautiful parkland just ten miles outside Oxford, the school has a strong reputation for providing a rigorous, broad curriculum underpinned by a firm belief that all pupils have the capacity for excellence if encouraged to be ambitious and take responsibility for their learning. The school is proud of the fact that its admissions process credits pupils who show a wide range of skills, leading to a dynamic and diverse learning environment. Students leave Cokethorpe to study at a range of different institutions, including Oxbridge. Results at GCSE and A Level are very positive, with a strong emphasis on the value that is added to students through excellent teaching and learning.

The School has a strong extra-curricular programme, and, whilst excellence in the classroom is paramount, all members of the Common Room are encouraged to see themselves as playing a role in this wider curriculum. It is a busy, purposeful school in which positive relationships develop and exciting and varied opportunities arise.

The Successful Applicant

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious and energetic teacher to join a strong and experienced department. The role demands excellent subject knowledge as well as a commitment to delivering lessons that are challenging and engaging for pupils across a wide age and ability range. These are exciting times for the development of the school and the right candidate will play an important role in supporting the Head of Department in exploring and evaluating new and innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

Applications are welcome from candidates at all stages in their careers, with a full and recognised induction programme in place which, for NQTs, will lead to the confirmation of QTS. For the right candidate, there is an opportunity to assume responsibility for taking responsibility as the subject leader.

The Science Department

The Department consists of twelve teachers, three of whom are Chemistry specialists. Dr Chris Flaherty, the Head of Science is a member of the Chemistry team. The department prides itself on its ability to work as a team, sharing good practice and championing practical science.

Chemistry is taught in the first two years following an in-house programme based on the National Curriculum. Each of the sciences is delivered by subject specialists wherever possible although the ability to offer a second science would be advantageous. In the third year the students currently start the Edexcel Science IGCSE course, which continues for two further years. Most pupils take Double Award Science although a significant number pursue separate awards in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

There is a healthy uptake at A Level, with approximately 60% of the Sixth Form taking a science and we are attracting a high calibre of student into the sciences.

The Science Department has eight well-equipped laboratories all of which have data projection facilities, four of which have interactive white boards. There is a large supply of data logging and trolleys of laptop computers at teachers’ disposal.

Expectations of both students and staff are high. This summer in science 55% of pupils achieved either a grade A or A* at IGCSE level with 93% achieving grades A*-C at GCSE. The grades at A Level Chemistry are also consistently amongst the best in the School.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
